Bought visitors to Tianzifang for some looking and shopping. Tai Thai was a good lunch stop with good food, reasonable price, and nice ambiance. I will return.

After shopping (and getting lost) in Tianzifang for a couple hours, Tai Thai is a good restaurant to stop in at. If you want to eat indoors, it is air conditioned and you have the option to relax on the floor on pillows or at a table with regular chairs. If it is a nice time of year, eat outside... More

Tai Thai is in the middle of the Tianzifang in Shanghai, which is a great maze of restaurants, bars and shops. You head up some tiny stairs which reveals upstairs seating - both tables and floor cushion seating, with dim atmospheric lighting. The menu offers a small but nice range, however I have found on the two occasions I have... More

Food is mediocre. Service is ok. However, be careful of what they bring to the table. We were a group of 12. Two individuals requested fruit juice. They got 2 pitchers of juice (instead of 2 glasses) and charged for it. They overcharged the bill with additional charges (beyond what I approved). I realized this when I got the charge... More

Good selection of Thai food. Doesn't try and do all dishes but those it does are quite good. If you like it spicy please sit back and enjoy.

Also known as Tikang Lu, Tianzifang is an old enclave of tight lanes and alleys located next to Exit #1 at the Dupuqiao Metro Station. (Line 9). In the last 15 years, Tianzifang has been expanded and gentrified and is now home to many small stores, boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants. It as a quite bohemian and artisan feel to... More

This restaurant is located off Taikang Road down lane 248 - it has a good atmosphere in the upstairs area. The food was good and not too expensive considering the area is quite exclusive now. The service was polite with waitress having enough English to get by.

I just got back from a 3 wk trip to Asia which ended in Shanghai. We found this restaraunt on a rainy night near Taikang Rd. The interior is just stunning; looks like a 1930's Shanghai Opium Den. I just loved it as did my traveling companions. Living in Chicago, where there is literally a Thai restaurant on every corner,... More

This is a beautiful spot for drinks, especially on a Fall evening - the upstairs balcony is open to the stars and away from the hustle and bustle that is otherwise Shanghai and TianZhiFang. The architecture/decor is old-school Shanghai with lots of narrow staircases, wood, candles. It's romantic and feels like Shanghai in the 1920s. That being said the food... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
