Dined here with another couple on their recommendation. The place was a little hard to find but once we did it was worth it. The restaurant is located in a busy section of restaurants and shops and is a nice area just to take a walk on a pleasant evening. As you walk in the restaurant you are led up... More

Oh my goodness! Went in for the lunchtime set meal. Looked ok, standard choices. Beer arrived within 5 minutes but then... 50 minutes for my guests food. Arrived cold. Waited another 20 minutes to get my food. Got the order wrong but by this point I was past caring. Some of the beef in the curry was inedible.

I didn't go to their actual restaurant, but they have a window to serve up a delicious tofu soup (sweet or sour, your choice) for 8RMB(!!!) and a few picnic benches outside. Probably not quite enough food for a meal, but delicious and a steal compared to eveywhere else in the area.

Went back after eating here in August. Had the green chicken curry, satay, CEO rice, and some fried beef. The curry is great with hints of lemon grass flavoring the curry. Beef was not special but the Satay was very good. We arrived about eight at night on a week night with very fast food service. HINT if you want... More

Bali-Bali's service is a complete disaster, especially with foreign customers. I have been there a couple of times and staff is completely away. Their poor English and my intermediate Chinese don't excuse them to bring the wrong plates with the wrong contents at the wrong time. Especially if your Chinese neighbors actually get everything write, what's going on in there... More

I found this great place through my Enjoy Shanghai book. It offered 50% discount on the whole meal. I thought it was a great deal so I gave it a try. I'm really glad I did, I'm not a mad connoisseur of Indonesian food, but I thought the meal was absolutely delightful with the recommended curry being quite flavorful and... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
