Kommune is located in the middle of Tianzifang in small courtyard with seating both in and outside. I had their big daddy breakfast, a well executed full English, and an iced coffee. The food was really good, if not a little expensive, and is perfect if you're after a western brunch/lunch. The coffee was less good but still passable; quite... More

Kommune Cafe is in a great location in Tianzifang, right in the middle of the neighbourhood's busy alleys. They serve great sandwiches and burgers, and brunch/breakfast on the weekends is fabulous. Decent beer and wine. Nice atmosphere, plus the manager is a character: very energetic and entertaining.

For an Aussie craving breakfast from home this was a God-send. Awesome Shakshouka and excellent barista coffee. I drink a macchiato coffee so no where to hide if you don't have good coffee beans- this place did not disappoint!

I stayed in Shanghai for 10 days and had Breakfast at the Kommune 5 times! I tried many different things from Avocado and eggs to sandwiches and cake and everything was absolutely delicious! The staff is super friendly and passionate. After few times they knew us and greeted us cheerfully when we arrived. It's lovely to sit in the little... More

Cute place set in the Taikang Lu area. The breakfast on Sunday is enormous (big daddy's breakfast). The waiters are friendly and the food is good. It is not too expensive, but also not cheap. We eat here every time we come to Shanghai (third year in a row).

I was wandering the alleys of this marvelous location and came across this place..... stopped for a drink..... and returned a few days later for another visit. A little haven in what can be a hectic shopping environment.

The music is good, staff excellent, and place is quite chilled out. We went there twice in the four days we were in Shanghai. Loved their spring rolls

There plenty of places to eat around but few of them have original food and good drinks with chill out music. Ingredients are of good quality. The patatas bravas are a must. Hamburger is great. Try also the slow cook lamb sandwich. They have good juices and I also recommend the Vietnamese coffee.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
