A cliche but a good cliche, there’s nowhere else in Asahikawa that does Genghis khan style lamb BBQ like Daikokuya. The “nama-lamb” is excellent quality meat and the “herb-lamb” that is flavored with herbs and is very tender, would be my two recommended choices. The atmosphere is a little hectic as they are constantly full with customers and the only real downside is that they cannot accept reservations, so most likely you’ll have to wait in their waiting room anywhere from 10 min to 40 min. But I’d say it’s still well worth the wait and it’s very affordable. Last time I went with just my wife, we ate till really almost too much food (cuz it was so good) and had a couple of drinks and total damage was just under 7000JPY. This is a great place to enjoy local Hokkaido lamb BBQ and I would recommend as well come back whenever we are in Asahikawa.

Top restaurant to eat together around a grill.

Stayed there for dinner. Know that place from three years ago and I‘m still happy to go there again. It‘s very local restaurant with local food, table grill and very friendly employees. Reservation is recommended if you are a bigger group and for late dinner.

At the suggestion of our ski guide, Toshi from Rising Sun, we scooted down from our hotel for a delicious bbq dinner. The lamb was awesome. My first time eating red meat in over 2 years. Well worth it!!

Daikokuya is very well known for Jingisukan (Hokkaido grilled lamb). We only managed to visit this place after knowing its existence for very long and skipping it even though we were in Asahikawa a few times. Maybe our expectation was too high. We were not impressed by the quality of the lamb and the place was also too busy and impersonal. Our favourite remains Daruma in Sapporo even though our last visit was not as good as previous.

Unwelcoming - complaint

Pros: meat was fresh, price good Cons: I was told to leave because my ticket was cancelled because I was 3 minute late (Was in the waiting room with my 5 year old daughter and 1.5 year old son). The guy got so mad, said my ticket got cancelled. I waited 1.5hrs. He was screaming at me. I told him I don't speak Japanese, he said he is Japanese so he called in Japanese. Extremely rude. Will never go back again. I asked him where is your manager, I want to make a complain. He said he owns the restaurant. At the end he said you either leave or stay and eat but shut up. I was mad, but I stayed because I waited 1.5 hrs with my wife and two children whom were hungry. The other people whom works there, service was good, only the guy in the attached picture was unfriendly and hostile. I like to make a complain for the person with the microphone in the attached picture. He claims to be the boss. I had number 66 with 2 children, 5 year old and 1 year old waiting at the waiting room. I saw the number 65 on the screen and walked to the front door. The number suddenly changed to 70. I asked the waiter. He said cancelled, very mad, I asked him why, he pointed at the screen with number 70. He showed he he called the number 66, 3 minutes before the current number. He argued that I was late, and told me it’s cancelled . I said I was at the waiting room, and did not understand Japanese and did not know he called 66 already. He said it’s cancelled and asked me to get out of the store. He was very rude and very mad, when I questioned him why he cancelled my number when I was coming over to the entrance with 2 kids. He was trying to kick me out the door with 2 kids and my wife. Lamb bbq in Hokkaido!

Lamb bbq in Hokkaido is a must. After a few days of skiing and convenience shop food we visited for dinner. Food was good and service was prompt. Staff helped to bbq. Place was a bit smoky and crowded and our clothes stink a little after dinner. We enjoyed dinner and will visit again if we in this city!

Delicious Experience

We visited this restaurant on a Wednesday night and had a great time with all four of us, including my two 3 year old twins. The restaurant was accommodating of our toddlers and provided kids tableware and even had children’s seats. It is a bit smoky from all the grills but I’ve been in much worse. The draft beer and cider were refreshing and cold; the Hokkaido ice cream was a nice ending. We ordered several servings of the Genghis Khan and of the marinated lamb and the vegetables. That, plus fresh rice, and pickles was an amazing meal. I recommend this restaurant experience!

I was staying 150m away so decided to try. I didn’t have to wait, May be because I was on my own. Service was rapid, I followed recommendations from other writers and it was perfect, washed down with a local stout, the bill including a local gelato was only Y2000. Great experience 👍😀

Best Jingisukan in Hokkaido

I ordered the raw lamb jingisukan, shoulder steak, Herb Raw Lamb. I wanted to order the lamb roll and thin slice unfortunately they didn't have it. The meat feels like beef. No Lamb aroma on it. The place is spacious, you can wait at the waiting room accross the street, it's convenient than most restaurant like ramen or sushi or tokachi. The location is a bit far from the asahikawa station but still accessible for me. Okay back to the food, the best one is the raw lamb, it's very very very good, the herb version is salty and you can't dip it in sauce (the waiter already told us not to). However the shoulder steak is a bit chewy and not too good. we ordered 3 portion of raw lamb, 1 portion shoulder steak and 1 portion herb raw lamb. Price is good. It's a better version from sapporo famous jingisukan daruma and also cheaper. The sauce also a bit salty than daruma which is good for me. Jingisukan daruma is also good but a bit pricy than this place.

Epic lamb yakiniku !

Super genghis khan yakiniku and the best bbq lamb you will ever try. Thought I was early reaching at 5:30 (opens at 5) but still had to wait close to an hour. The restaurant gets so busy that there’s a dedicated waiting room area just across the street. Authentic food, smokey atmosphere and an experience you will never forget!

You can’t beat this type of experience. Some people on here say that the service isn’t great but let me tell you every single worker is very busy doing their job. If you call them over they will be more than happy to help and get you a drink/more food. Great and fun experience for everyone with amazing tasting food!

Delicious, probably the best BBQ Lamb I have ever had Delicious sauce, staff are professional. Order No1, 3 and 5. Actually, order 1 serving for all lamb, and repeat the one you like the most is the best idea. Excellent ventilation, and charcoal burning is perfect. 9/10 for sure.

Missing lamb taste

The restaurant is very popular with locals and tourists. Even we came at 5:30pm have to wait for 30minutes to get in. The service was very efficient but somehow the lamb even though is fresh is lacking of real lamb taste. We ordered a few selections of lamb shoulder, lamb racks and rolls. We thought the best was the slice meat (生ラム)with herbs or not. The lamb roll (ラムロール) tasted more like mutton than lamb. Although many people rated this is a good place to have a lamb but I feel the lamb here is lacking of taste. NZ lamb definitely is better taste. Also the grill was not so good! It collects oil and you get the lamb oil splashed on you. Very dangerous!

Poor Ventilation But Good Lamb

During the 40min long wait outside the restaurant, we saw diners coming out and started spraying their bags, coats, shirts and even pants with refreshers provided at the entrance. Once our turn was called, we went in and then knew why they had to do just that. Inside the restaurant was so smoky that it took a while to get use to breathing normally. With a small area fully occupied and everyone was grilling their lambs, smoke was not exhausted fast enough. I wondered how the Waiters and Waitresses coped working in such an environment. When a waiter helped us to grill our lamb for the start(seem like they would demonstrate how to grill the meat properly)and we brought them into our mouth, we kind of forgot the smoke filled ambient. We were quick to gobbled various dishes that we ordered for one reason that it was absolutely delicious, and the other was my 6 years old son was complaining about the stuffy and smoky ambient. We had our very satisfying dinner rather quick with only one pint of beer. When we were out of the restaurant door, we were so appreciative of the fresh cool night air. And we did what other does; sprayed refreshers all over our cloths, bag to get rid of that oily smell. By the way, the price was quite reasonable too.

Great lamb with draft beer

Open 17.00-23.30 This restaurant is not hard to find Foreigners are welcome, that’s great cause somewhere in Japan not accept non-japanese It’s Yakiniku style, lamb is the most preferable dishes I love all lamb dishes, 1 is not enough, haha But the bad things is the smoke, insufficient fan cause grilled smoke and smell not good, but it’s a little problem for some Overall, I rated 4 stars for this.
