Couple of months before visiting California this year read story about this restaurant saying two things: 1) this restaurant is among top 10 US places for steaks and 2) US astronauts celebrate completion of their missions in this restaurant. We drove there the whole way...More

Discovered this gem on Yelp, but there are really no words to describe how wonderful this rustic little steak house is. Set in the rolling hills about 20 miles from central Santa Maria, with no cell service(awesome), you sit in a smallish room where the...More

Love the atmosphere its like an old stage coach stop in early California, out in the middle of no where. I like the fact that you are able to watch the master chef cook your steak or what ever you chose to eat on a...More

Spectacular. Simply spectacular. Very consistent quality over the years and you know exactly what to expect. The steaks are amazing, especially the ribeye. Also know that you can request custom or larger cuts they don't list on the menu. Ask the server. My favorites here...More

They don't make restaurants like this anymore. The Hitching Post features five courses (standard), spectacular barbecue, really attentive service, a lot of history (65 years!) and great prices. Great steaks. The t-bone and the ribeye were both exceptional. The artichoke appetizer is a must-have too! Low key, country ambiance with a good vibe. Service was also attentive and generally good.

A short drive outside of Santa Maria, the effort is well worth it. Everyone traveling between L.A. and the Bay Area on 101 seems to know of this place. A 1960s Western dining feel. Old historical photos on the wall with full exposed grill in...More

Three things: 1. Hard to find, especially in fog. 2. Not cheap - these folk know the value of their goods. Ribeye at $45 (but that's a full plate and dessert, too). 3. It's awesome. Table of three, busy Wednesday night - the decor is...More

An amazing steak! I have eaten here many times, but it was especially good yesterday since I had not had solid food for two days (colonoscopy)! The Hitching Post is a walk in the past started by one of the ranching families that has been...More

THIS is the place, y'all. You can't be a vegetarian and eat here....well, you could, but it would be difficult. This is the original Hitching' Post in a tiny, no cell service town, called Casmalia. (I heard my first owl when we came out of...More

Yes, there is a small bar area for solo diners. I've dined there alone in the past.
