Miniature space with some USSR-style tourist samovars and other tchotchkes, attentive and friendly service, but lousy food and no vodka. What kind of Russian restaurant can exist without vodka? In their case, it seems to me they are trying to catch monkeys with pop-corn. Cheap setup, no alcohol license, watery tea and Soviet junk for decoration. Ukrainian borscht was truly... More

My sister and niece took me to this great restaurant. I have never had Russian food so it was a pleasure to try some. The place is cute and a little eclectic with homey decorations. It is a very small restaurant, cozy. We enjoyed tea and chose a sample of dishes to try. It was all delicious! I was so... More

We recently visited Russia on a cruise, so we thought we'd try Russian food in San Diego to keep that vacation feeling going. After searching on-line and looking at reviews, we decided to try Village House Kalina. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've EVER had. Both of our meals were very monotonous (Eating the same... More

Really excellent selection of Russian food that is prepared well with reasonable prices. The portions were really huge and very tasty.

YUM !! It's hard to find a good Russian restaurant or a Russian restaurant at all. This place was amazing. Some of the best menu items from that part of the world and could not have enjoyed it more. Every item was prepared to perfection, the meat was cooked so that it fell apart with a spoon and no fat... More

Pro-tip: don't show up an hour after they open expecting to get whatever you want off of their menu. We got there a little over an hour after opening. There was nobody else in the dining room, so the sweet girl who was working that day let us pick where to sit. She really was the sweetest thing. She took... More

This was the first time my wife and I had Russian food. It was a good experience and good food. We had the dumplings, beef stroganoff and walnut cake. The ambience felt you were at relatives' house-kitchen. Attentive service and calm music for dinning.

My wife and I ate here last week, we shared an eggplant salad which was tasty and easily 4 times the size the waitress had indicated. Each of us had a bowl of borsht. Thank goodness we did not order an entre as we were not able to finish what we were served. I found the food tasty, the service... More

Visited on a rainy night, so the warm food hit the spot. However we waited a few minutes to be seated before finally sitting ourselves down, with the waitress in full view in the back on her cell

We have to keep this place in business! Tucked away in La Mesa strip mall is a little gem that I never would have tried, were it not for an adventurous friend. It truly felt like dining in someone's home. The food and the service were excellent, but so personal. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, to the point that the four... More
