We stopped here due to the proximity to the beach and the loud vibe. We were pleasantly surprised by the food, it was GREAT!

You can't really beat the location; it is right on the beach and has a great top floor with views over the ocean and beachfront. We sat downstairs as it was packed on the Friday night we visited; the atmosphere was great and to be honest downstairs is a little quieter so you could chat, etc. We had the fish... More

We stopped here for a drink. We sat at open air area on second floor which directly overlooks the ocean. This is a small but very lively and fun place with great views. The servers were friendly and attentive. (This place would not be good for any kind of "private" conversation) Recommend

Good food, stunning views, great sunsets, great staff, food ordinary, noisy but wild at night! Worth a visit during the day or evening.

It's right along Venice. Each so there's plenty to see along the way. The food is pretty good and the servers were very friendly.

The outdated grungy exterior changes to a nice inviting rooftop modern Deck with Great Views. We happened into the Whaler in a Bike trip down from Santa Monica. A nicer upscale, Modern Bar menu. Great Drink options from beer, wine and cocktails. We arrived at Sunday Brunch time and were able to creep on the people of Venice Beach while... More

Wanted to meet up with some friends and get some Ocean air(land-locked midwesterners here). The Venice Whaler looks a bit 'Divey'..but is clearly not by the excellent service and 'Up A Notch' from the basic expected beach bar food. Our friend Split a huge basket of Calamari, which upon sample made me regret not ordering a basket for myself...meaty, tender... More

The Whaler was recommended to us by another restaurant a short walk away. My teenage son and I asked for a table and were told that because my son was a minor we could not go upstairs but could eat inside downstairs or outside. We chose outside as it was a nice night. When the waitress arrived, and before I... More

My group of 5 had no problem getting a table for Saturday brunch when we stopped along our coastal bike ride. The tacos were great, breakfast burrito was amazing, and the short rib hash was exquisite. Also, the beers on tap were great after the hot ride! If I am in the area again, I would definitely go back.

Stopped in for brunch/Lunch after bike riding along the beach in the morning. Had sliders off the appetizers menu. This was plenty for just me. Service was good.

Staying in Venice

Neighbourhood Profile
Venice has always danced to its own beat as the epicenter of bohemian culture in Los Angeles. Along the boardwalk there are street performers and local craftsmen selling their wares. Original paintings, souvenirs, and jewelry are on display. Crowds of visitors marvel at the sites while weightlifting enthusiasts pump iron in plain view, and skateboarders do their tricks around the skate park. All of it happens under the warm California sun with sprawling views of sand and sea. Heading east, the main drags of Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Main Street are lined with boutique shops, some major retail stores, art galleries and restaurants. Here the ambiance is more relaxed and upscale than the frenetic boardwalk area. Venice is a mostly walkable (and certainly bikeable) neighborhood, full of areas to explore.
