I love the intimacy of this location. California Street district of Palo Alto, consistently good food, VERY friendly and attentive staff which makes for the intimacy. It's a friendly, neighborhood bistro. I had a great Caesar salad and skipped the entrees, although the lobster salad and the Petrale Sole with king oyster mushrooms looked really good. Instead I had the... More

We just had a great meal here with friends. It is a tiny cozy restaurant on a side street. It was a bit hard to find because they have a tent like structure added onto the front to give them a couple of more tables. The menu is limited but everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinners. I went for the T-bone... More

I have eaten at Bistro Elan at least 50 times over the years. The chef is creative and the food is consistently good. The flavors are enjoyable and they use fresh ingredients. The staff is awesome!

If we want to give ourselves a treat, we go to Bistro Elan Birch Street. It is a small restaurant, with some seating outside. The food is consistently delicious, as are the wines. The chef and his staff are friendly and attentive, without being intrusive. Some of the highlights: cold cucumber soup, the pommes frites, the duck confit, the creme... More

I know many locals swear by this place, and it was certainly filled with young professionals the night we were there. But the food was pretty ordinary, the menu limited and uninspired (particularly for desserts). The chicken soup was really good, but our duck confit was overdone, the risotto under the duck was mushy (and supposedly enhanced with butternut squash... More

This was my fifth or sixth visit to Bistro Élan and I was disappointed. The pommes frites are no longer freshly made but partially precooked and then heated for the order. I could taste it with the first bite and confirmed the change in preparation with the waiter. The scallop main dish was too salty and the dessert which stated... More

We have been making the french fries exactly the same way for the last twenty years. Our fries (like all good fries) are cooked twice. The second fry is "to order" for the customer, that has always been the case. We are sorry that you did not like the french fries on your visit. The chocolate mouse in your review... More

Bistro Elan on California Avenue and the chef is now running a delightful smaller restaurant, called Bistro Elan by some, but now also called Birch Street. Definitely worth a visit, but the change may be confusing to people who don't know what's up.

I live in Palo Alto, and my office is on California Avenue. I get to eat in the neighborhood all the time for both lunch and dinner, and Bistro Elan is consistently one of the best places in town. The menu is short, and the ingredients are fresh. At lunch, you can go from a soup and half sandwich up... More
