We had a large group for cocktails and passarounds in a private room. It is definitely a lively place, and still quite popular. As a bar, therefore, it is okay. However, the food our group had was mediocre. Service was variable, with some waiters reasonably attentive, and others not so helpful.

Food was excellent. We have eaten here many times over many years, whenever we are in town. The seafood is terrific. Service and ambiance have deteriorated a bit over time, but the food remains stellar. Prices are average for this kind of food and are fair. Wine list is somewhat pricey with decent selections. It used to be better.

We sat a a bar table right in front of the hostess. She and the rest of the staff ignored us. They charged us for food we didn't get. Every time someone served us it was someone new and they said "I'll tell the bartender". The menu is fun but the preparation is sub-middle of the road. Fried food was... More

A few years back, this restaurant was real hot spot in downtown San Mateo. It has losted much of its luster. We dined here a couple of years ago when it was in decline. The appetizer was okay and the main entrees was tasteless. We heard about its new management transition last year and came back for another dinner. There... More

I like Kingfish. I really do. I want so badly to LOVE Kingfish, but it just doesn't rise to that level - at least not consistently. We've gone there later night and sat downstairs and I think by then when things have died down it's pretty solid - good drinks, really cool atmosphere, raw bar, good cajun food. In this... More

I had lunch here a few months back and found the food interesting and done well. Great French Fries, artichokes, salads, etc. Nice decor and friendly staff.

I've been to Kingfish many times and they never disappoint. Always very tasty dishes but I agree that the portions are rather small for the price. Recommend the benets to top off the meal.

Went on a dinner date here. I ordered a filet mignon and it was very good, cooked perfectly! The rest of our meals were very good as well. Their menu had plenty of options for everyone. It's also in the heart of downtown San Mateo.

The bar has a nice, old-world feel with a good selection of beers and happy hour cocktails. Dinner was delicious with a nice selection of fish and vegetarian choices. Our downstairs booth was perfect to catch up with old friends, while the atmosphere upstairs was more lively (and noisy). A fun night out in San Mateo.

The meats that we ordered was bland. NOT RECOMMENDED. That's why this place only have 3 stars at best.

Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live music line-up, cozy booths, and private dining rooms that would make even the French Quarter jealous. "...to walk into Kingfish is, to walk into someone's dream.", is how acclaimed SF Chronicle food editor, Michael Bauer, referred to the decor at Kingfish. Ownership takes great pride in the fact that they have one of the largest collections of authentic, Southern-Lousiana folk art in the country, to which they are always adding. The food at Kingfish is American and gives almost every palette a reason to crave. There is a passion that emanates directly from the owners, to serve only the freshest seafood possible. The steaks that are served are some of the best and tastiest you can find in the world. The ability to give each guest exactly what they crave and desire has been an increasing goal of Kingfish in recent years.
