Being from Texas, I wasn't expecting much. Boy was I pleasantly surprised This is not Texmex. It's leans more toward the style of my favorite Oaxaca-native chef (a J. Beard award winner) It is a crowded-trendy spot and we went without a reservation. Fortunately, we found seats at the bar. The bartenders were very helpful and informative. For cocktail I... More

The food here was excellent. Service was quick and efficient. A booking would be recommended as downstairs was very busy the night I visited. The upstairs booth was quieter. I couldn't fault this restaurant.

Tried the restaurant out after after spending the day on the Santa Monica pier. The food was absolutely delicious! I tried the pork dish which was mouth watering as the meat was perfectly cooked. My wife is vegetarian and she had enough of options to chose from. Generally the place is recommend for its signature margarita's but I tried the... More

The food and drinks were great, if you can make a reservation, we went without one and we were very lucky to find seats.

Really great atmosphere in this place. The food was amazing and so were the drinks. Be prepared to wait on the weekends as there is a decent wait even with reservations! I gave them a 4 instead of 5 just because the tables are really close together and I was constantly getting bumped in the back by people working and... More

We wanted to have some Mexican food but did not want spend too much. This place is a very cozy room with prompt service. We started off with Guacamole & Chips. I make my own and their Guacamole was wonderful. Fresh and loaded with large chunks of avocado. We had the scallops and the pulled pork carnitas. We were stuffed... More

Very busy but very yummy! We had a great dinner here, not that we ate the whole menu, but I bet you couldn't fault one dish in this joint. It's not cheap. Great Margaritas too!

My husband and I have been to Mercado several times and it is remains one of our favorite restaurants in Santa Monica. We have always made reservations for a table, but do know that there is communal seating in the middle of the ground floor in the restaurant if you want to stop by and walk in. We have some... More

Well, I can't intelligently comment on the "authenticity" but the carnitas here are pretty damn tasty. An order of chilequilles w/ carnitas and one or four margaritas is a superior way to start any weekend! ....but do be prepared to spend some $$$

Busy place but the service was great. The guacamole was nice and rustic and the chorizoqueso was a yummy appetizer. The drink menu was fun and delicious. I had the carnitas stuffed tamales. We also ordered carne asada but they brought something else with cauliflower and immediately fixed that for us. The spices were just right and the food was... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
