Stopped by for lunch. A surprisingly great find for tacos and margaritas. Extremely affordable and fast service!

Went to the pioneer to watch a packer game, walked from campus, had an AWESOME time. Ordered a salad, and the service was great. I highly recommend the rooftop area, was a great place to enjoy some sun and some football. 👍🏻

It has nice open air first floor and rooftop seating for a nice evening of appetizers and drinks! Not directly downtown but worth the drive! Great Beer also.

Visited here before a show at DU -- thank goodness the show was great. We were with a large group, so service was spotty. Drink specials were good, though my house margarita was watered down. The food was terrible. My companion and I both had the house specialty tacos -- her fish, my shrimp. I added the beans and rice... More

As others have said, this great family eatery has changed from a college hangout to a nice place for "grown-ups" to eat, drink and be merry. Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of college kids here and rowdy fun to be had late at night, but that just makes it all the better. Great Mexican food, a few arcade... More

The classic college hang out of the pioneer has improved much since their remodel and addition of the rooftop bar. The drinks are pretty good I love their pomegranate margarita! Not a huge selection of beer but sometimes it's good to keep it simple. Their chips and salsa are awesome and I love their chicken nachos!

The food is realllllly good. Pub fare, but the cooks have it going and it's all way great. Smoked wings, super Mexican. Coupled with an open air upstairs, a college crowd, and good beer....

The Pioneer has evolved from a college hang out to a neighborhood gathering place. It is an easy walk from one of the many condo/apartments. The atmostphere is lively, with food truck style street tacos and many brands of tequila that are reasonable priced. When the weather get warmer the 2nd floor deck and the main floor zip away walls... More

Place has a cool roof top patio with a fire pit. Great place to grab and drink and enjoy all the sunshine Denver has to offer. Highly recommend the chicken nachos, they are delicious. Place also has a bar, pool table, and picnic table style seating inside. The staff is friendly. Only downside to this place is that parking finding... More

Quality Mexican next to campus. We have enjoyed a variety of dishes here on three occasions. Very tasty at a reasonable price.

Description
Ahh, new bar smell. Kind of like new car smell - except new car smell is the smell of PVC, Phthalates, and other things that we will someday learn were likely unhealthy to inhale. But enough of my buzzkill eco-babble...The Pioneer is brand spanking new, but is also exactly like every just-off-campus lounge that you’ve ever loved. Great vibe, cool booths, nice bar, requisite memorabilia from the local college (University of Denver aka DU), and a staff that lives to treat you right. Oh, and there is none of that stale barf smell like you had at that place you were just reminiscing about (for me, it was College Hill Tavern). Ursula and the rest of the team run this place like the well-oiled machines that rolled out of there back when it was a filling station. On a Saturday at 5:00, I stroll in for a sloppy Chicken Burrito (really tasty - they were roasting a whole bushel of fresh Poblano peppers on the grill as I walked in). Seating Darwinism gives me full control over where I grab a table - e.g. the best one to watch USC crush some lesser team. The big garage door is up, like the maw of a Whale Shark letting in the great afternoon Colorado breeze and showing off the patio. (I am winning a bet that I couldn’t use "maw" in an analogy - so just deal with it). And then the babes start showing up. Quality babes. I mean, "my-folks-pay-$40K-per-year for DU, I wear William Rast jeans (don’t ask how I know this stuff), and I don’t patronize vomit-smelling pubs" hot. So let’s recap: Unique place with an old soul. Great staff. Cold Drinks well poured. Cool hockey and other memorabilia, including a ski autographed by DU's 2008 NCAA National Champion Ski Team. Quality affordable food that is predominantly Mexican in nature. I’m forgetting something... oh yeah, chicks. If that sounds like your kind of place, then give the Pioneer a whirl. From tenured Profs to just-legal Sophs, this place is the ticket. Go right now. Neighborhoods served: DU, Observatory Park, Washington Park, Bonnie Brae, Cherry Hills.
