Free State always comes through with good food, good service, and great beer. The fish and chips are on point. Staff is friendly. Good selection of beers with seasonal options.

This is a staple of the local restaurant scene! If people are new in town or just visiting, we always suggest Free State or take them there. You just can't go wrong. Friendly staff, great food and the most artfully crafted beers around!

Great atmosphere, historic building. Interesting to see the mechanics of the production of beer. Vast selection of local brews.

I'm not a beer drinker, but everyone I know loves Free State's beer. The reason I love Free State? The food is hands down some of Lawrence's finest. My only problem with this venue is that it can get really loud, so be prepared to love your food, but you might have a hard time conversing with your fellow diners.

We were told to go here for our first weekend in Lawrence and it continues to be one of our favorites. It is almost always crowded but the call ahead system works pretty well for us. Our family of 6 rarely has to wait long, and waiting is made much easier with their brews.

Locals, students, and families eat here. Great food and beer all around. My husband had a sampling of a variety of beers. We each had good meals, including a puff pastry and mushroom special for dinner. Nice atmosphere, lots of activity, and busy. We were then able to go down the street and do some shopping.

The first legal brewery in KS with excellent beer and outstanding food. IPAs, Pale Ales, etc, gourmet / boutique style menu with many unique items. A must visit on every trip to Lawrence - IMO.

My husband and I both had the special of BBQ chicken, baked beans, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. It was really good but baked BBQ and not grilled. WAY over crowded in back room! Tables should be removed for customer convenience. Also not a good place for business as it was extremely loud because of so many people in such... More

Even when it was packed to the gills, this place never disappoin ts. Fantastic beers, excellent and knowledgable wait and bar staff and the food was freakin killer. Lucked out and got a plce at the bar at roughly 1830 hours on a Friday. Even eating at the bar was cool - no rush no pushy patrons - all good.... More

Lawrence, KS is just like a hundred other university towns except for 2 world class places : Mass Street Music and Free State Brewery. These "do not miss" businesses make every trip to Lawrence worthwhile. Whether one is looking for great food/drink; ambience ; or the ability to "watch the locals", Free State is the place to go. I have... More
