I walked in the door expecting a laid-back little place with some Swamp Pop playing in the background. What we walked into was close enough to that - country music, though, & a few local construction workers. I thought we would be seated, first, but...it turns out it's not that kind of place. Order from the menu that is taped down to the counter. (Tip #1: Read the ENTIRE menu. I was disappointed when I missed out on a better deal, because I felt rushed to read it all due to people in line behind me.) Take your number, fill your cup, & seat yourself at any of the booths that line 3 walls or the longer dining tables in the middle. There is adequate space for a small crowd - I would guess roughly 60 people.
Our food was HOT when it was delivered to the table - first the appetizers: sweet potato fries & "Cajun fries" (from-the-freezer crinkle-cut fries with maybe 6 tablespoons of crawfish etouffee over the top). (Tip #2: Don't be fooled by photos on the menu; the plates are overloaded with fries & the etouffee was almost nonexistent.)
The food WAS GOOD. Our table ordered fish plates (slightly spicy, but delicious, though overloaded with fries), a shrimp po-boy (mouthwatering) over loaded with fries, a T-boy burger (a cheeseburger with ketchup, really tasty) overloaded with fries, & chicken tenders (the only thing I didn't taste on the table) overloaded with fries. I'm sure you get the picture.
Then came the check. 4 adults, 1 child (age 7), 2 toddlers: over $101, BEFORE the tip. For close to $125, we had a meal that could easily be surpassed by Raising Cane's, Rally's (THOSE fries are worth the money!), & MANY other small Cajun/Creole/Louisiana restaurants. The food was in no way special or unique to this place. Steamboat Bill's has a better selection & the prices are similar.
I'm going to say it is NOT a great place for local cuisine, because there were so many blase foods - a burger, chicken tenders, an overpriced steak - & a very limited variety of local food.
The staff was great, though, & the waitress remembered who ordered what, even though we did make the order confusing (we had elderly people in our party). All in all, if there were just less fries, more entree (or more reasonable pricing), I would recommend it. Otherwise, skip right over to Lake Charles & (Tip #3!!!--->)find a better place!More
