I was so impressed the moment that i entered Commonwealth. Love the name and the ambiance of the place. The hostess was beautiful and kind. The service was great. It was a huge amount of food. I ordered vegan saag with mushrooms, a unique combo....It was beyond delicious! My only challenge was parking but I learned that the parking lots allow for 2 free hours and it was quite easy and a short walk. Thank you, Commonwealth! I will certainly go back!More

We did carryout from this for the first time this evening. Had Chicken Vindaloo, an Eggplant Curry, and Butter Chicken (no idea why they don't call it by its real name, Murgh Makhani). The Butter Chicken was one of the best I can recall having...eaten anywhere (including India and the UK). Very rich flavor. The Vindaloo was good - pretty high on the spicy scale but not a ton of other flavors. The dark meat in the dish was awesome, but the breast meat a bit dry. The Eggplant was spicier than the Vindaloo - couldn't really taste much eggplant flavor through the spice. I would encourage them to turn down the spice a tad on the eggplant so you can taste something else. Had the garlic naan, which was a smidge undercooked - a bit soft and spongy whereas I like a naan that is thoroughly cooked with just a little bit of burnt spots on it from the tandoor oven. I ordered curbside - but do NOT do it. The hostess told me I would have to stop the car in a traffic lane on Old Georgetown Road, which, to put it mildly, is insane. I was stopped on Trade Street at &pizza - literally 60 feet from their door and the hostess refused to walk it out to me, saying I had to be right in front of the door. Just order carry out and leave your wingman in the car on Trade Street or park in the garage and walk to the restaurant to pick it up yourself. Stopping in the traffic lane on Old Georgetown is going to cause an accident.More

We loved this restaurant! The food was great and the decor made us feel like we were in an elegant Indian restaurant in Washington, DC and not Rockville, Md. I started out with Indian Hot and Sour soup, which was incredibly better than any Chinese...restaurant hot and sour soup I have ever had. It was served piping hot, and spicey hot, so much so that it had my eyes tearing up. We also had chicken tika masala and a vegetable masala dish. Both were first rate. Service was excellent. We plan to both come back here in the future when we want excellent Indian food in a fine dining setting.More

So good I went to consecutive nights. Fantastic food, diligent service with a smile, and eagerness to ensure you're enjoying the experience. Second night they accommodated a large group at very short notice and didn't miss a beat, work quick service. They are also very...flexible for allergies, vegans, etc. Couldn't recommend the Commonwealth highly enough, for any foodie looking for authentic Indian cuisine. Thank you!More

We were treated to a wonderful experience by dining at Commonwealth India on a Sunday with friends for lunch…beginning with the well appointed decor and white table cloth service, culminating in amazing Indian food — delivered with pride. We loved (x4) the tandoori octopus (appetizer),...the butter chicken, Paneer Lababdar, and the lamb vindaloo (if you can brave its heat) — all wonderful. For those that are familiar with the 2014 (Helen Morten) film, you will also recall the Maison Mumbai … in this film, the Indian restaurant provides diners with a unique experience of culture and food that tantalize the palate and leave a memorable experience...this same wonderful authentic Indian experience — memorable cuisine and a warm ambiance — is served with pride at Commonwealth India.More

Not sure how I missed them before but they top my list of the local Indian restaurants. The menu varies a fair amount from most and the food is excellent. Good vegetarian options. I'm not sure what some of the complaints were on the relative...spiciness/heat (maybe they've read the reviews here?). I prefer to taste the actual seasonings of the dish (not only chilis or chili oil) but have been served all ends of the spectrum. One of the dishes (gobi) was spiced to the edge of what I'd think is suitable, the second (channa) had a mild kick (though more than many), the yellow dal was very mild. Most of the rest of the locals are using low grade cooking oil so this is my clear choice these days.More

I felt the need to give Commonwealth a pandemic review, because I'm sure it's a struggle for them right now. This is a wonderful restaurant. I've not eaten in since the pandemic began, but they are stellar for takeout. The food is amazing, the proportions...are generous, and they usually throw in a freebie. This is the best Indian food I've had in Montgomery County.More

I am a big fan of a Indian food and have gone to many Indian restaurants in the DC area and elsewhere. Commonwealth Indian has a menu that, while not as extensive as some, offers a wide variety of dishes, some of which are not...found in the mainstream Indian places. The food was very well prepared, the service was gracious, and the restaurant’s ambiance was inviting.More

Taste ***** Quality ***** Service ***** Price $-$$++++ The lamb fried rice is the best dish. Kurab is the desert I like the most. However, the desert that made from cheese is also delicious.

I love Indian food and, as such, have tried all the Indian restaurants I can find. Some are better than others, but none superb - until NOW. My friend recommended we try the buffet for lunch and it was the best Indian food I've had...in the Rockville area, ever. With just the right level of spicy and mild, and a great variety of dishes in the buffet for both non- and vegetarians alike, I have finally found a place I really enjoy. In addition to the food, the environment is clean and pleasant, and the service is impeccable. My only complaint is that, with a name like Commonwealth, I'm afraid the Indian-loving public will never find it. It doesn't scream 'Indian' - and I'd like this place to stay around for a long, long time. Wonderful!More

Less than a year old. Amazing flavors, Service is VERY good, manager stopped by and ensured all was well. Fast service, good served hot. Rice was fluffy, Naan was dripping w/ garlic. Good selection of wines / beers not so much but served cold. This...place is flat out fantastic. Don't think the soft jazz music is a match however.More

One of the most finest Indian restaurant I came across US and food was authentic specifically the makhani dal, makhani sauce was as good as I use to have in India. Ragwadi murg was perfectly cooked and nothing additional was required. Naans were hot and...perfect cooked unlike other restaurant providing half cooked naans. However, I was little upset with bhindi masala with contained tomatoes and it bought a bitterness in the bhindi. Overall my experience was great in this classy place. And off course the interior was mind blowing .More

After reading about Commonwealth Indian in the Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine, we wanted to try the restaurant to see if it lived up to the hype. The answer is YES! The restaurant itself is beautiful and luxurious. All of the servers and the host...make a big effort all during your meal to make sure everything is to your satisfaction and are more than happy to explain about the food preparations if you are interested. The lamb chops in korma sauce were so tasty. Highly recommend! We also shared the began bartha which was very flavorful even though it was slightly different than the preparation we had eaten in other restaurants. We loved both dishes as well as the dal makhani and naan that we shared as an appetizer. We will go back. It will be hard not to have the same delicious dishes but we want to try other things on the menu. Only slight complain - we did not have much time with our appetizer course as the dinner came out rather quickly. We would have enjoyed at least five to ten more minutes between the courses (and time to finish the appetizer before the main course arrived).More

While not reviewed much on TA this place has garnered very good (dinner) reviews by the critics, so while the $15 weekday buffet is a little bit more than other Indian I was happy to try. There were about 8 dishes offered, the proteins being...tandoori and butter chicken and a kind of fried fish. Reviews below mention goat curry and that really would have helped, in that I have two main criticisms: Remarkably, there was not one dish offered that I'd consider a "curry" which is kind of the point for an Indian place. (Butter chicken, invented in London, doesn't count, neither the spinach side dish). Second, and related, everything was brought to the lowest common denominator of mild spicing, which I found bland. I know people have different preferences, but there was nothing for those of us who like things hotter. They could put out a couple of more spiced dishes marked appropriately. Warm naan brought to table, a nice touch but not sure I'd go back for dinner based on this unimpressive experience.More
