Reviewed yesterday NEW

We wanted a pub lunch during a long journey from Kent to Cornwall and drove quite a distance from the A303 to find this place. We arrived at 2.00pm to be told that lunches were no longer being served but that we could have sandwiches. I placed our order with a surly barmaid whilst raising my eyebrows at the outrageous... We ran into heavy traffic on the main road, hadn't had lunch, and my husband was desperate for a loo. We saw a sign for the Black Dog and ran through country lanes into a charming village with the pub on the corner. Easy parking in their lot. They had an unimaginative menu but I thought that jacket potatoes with... More

My third visit to this cosy country pub for lunch as always the food was excellent everything cooked perfectly to order my steak and kidney pudding was to die for. Very friendly and welcoming landlady who is always a joy to chat with I can highly recommend this pub will be back soon.

I came in for a drink, was left waiting for 5 minutes as the staff were nowhere to be seen. When they did turn up, they were unfriendly, unhelpful and didnt particularly seem like they wanted my custom. This is a shame as the pub itself is in a good location.

How silly of me answering the phone in the kitchen at two minuets past six ( we open at six ) you frantically ringing the last order bell I couldn't quite be behind the bar to pour your pint of beer ! Silly me I should have alerted the press and had the band playing all ready for your arrival... More

We sometimes make a stop at The Black Dog en route to relatives in the South West. A couple of miles off the A303 ( so not a major detour) Always found the staff welcoming. Lovely open fires, a good selection of tasty home made food for all palates. Speedy service, ample parking - never feel disappointed. Would highly recommend... More

We keep returning to this most friendly and professionally run inn, as we just know we will be treated to a great evening and a first rate meal. We are astonished by the few silly negative reviews here on TripAdvisor. The welcome is always warm and engaging - the landlady is an absolute gem - and one cannot imagine otherwise... More

This was my second stop at the Black Dog, the first being for a Friday lunch on my way to a cottage (brilliant onion soup on a cold winters day). I felt compelled to write a review this time as we were so impressed. We returned to the Black Dog, complete with our black dog, and were made feel immediately... More

Called in on the off chance of getting a table, the bar was very busy with a large party. We were offered a table if prepared to wait, we were more than happy to wait. We both had the trout, one with bacon and one with black pudding, both meals were amazing. Would highly recommend.

Haven driven past many times we finally had the opportunity to pop in for a quick lunch. Good parking at the rear of the pub and a nice garden for when it's warmer. Nice atmosphere with lots of black and white photos of stars past and some present. Friendly landlady and local chap enjoying his lunch but happy to chat... More

The inn is signed on the A303. It takes 5-10 minutes to reach the inn - and it is well worth the slight detour. The inn has an extensive lunchtime menu, a friendly welcome and top quality food.
