Attracted by intriguing signage, we called in for lunch and were warmly received by the lovely ladies who run this place. Obviously developed by an enterprising family farm it offers an enjoyable lunch beside a small lake populated by carp who provide entertainment when fed! Magnificent views to enjoy whilst eating delicious home prepared food Very straightforward and not licensed... More

We read the glowing reviews of this charming restaurant on TripAdvisor and we can see why it is such a hit with visitors! From the deck above the dam , you can feed the carp and see the weaver birds in action, building their nests. Such "natural" entertainment that most city dwellers crave, is all to be found at the... First time at a restaurant where one is given a piece of bread on arrival and told to go and feed the fish (greedy carp) in the pond! Then we could order excellent salads on the terrace. A very characterful place and owner and we were glad to find it open on this trip.

Just off the R62 on the edge of Barrydale we were attracted by the signage which offered a waterside view; in the middle of the countryside. Intriguing! Went in and ordered two coffees so was surprised to be given two slices of white bread. All became clear when the host explained that this was for us to feed the carp... More

We were greeted with huge smiles and given bread to feed their fish which was great fun. The service was excellent and the food absolutely delicious. A must visit for anyone passing Barrydale

We had a lovely light lunch stop here sitting on the deck outside a tin shack by a fish filled pond. The salmon salad was good, as were the scones with jam & cream all dished up by lovely staff. Worth the detour search.

We happened upon this rustic little cafe by chance, looking for a place to give our baby a bottle along Route 62. Cakes were all home made by the owner and delicious. The highlight is feeding bread (given to you when you arrive) to the thriving mass of carp in the pond from the veranda.

Came across the Blue Cow by chance when travelling the N62 and popped in for a quick lunch. The converted shed (with great history as they tell you when you sit down) is a great spot for a stop off. Seated overlooking a lake populated by colourful birds the place is relaxed and the food delicious and portions huge. Great... More

On way to Cape Town had wonderful respite and excellent value breakfast overlooking the little dam. Good coffee, excellent hostess - her clever son had just won an award for his B and B in Barrydale. Thank you.

Description
Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.
