The kids loved feeding the carps with bread that the owner of the Blue Cow generously provided. The atmosphere was very nice. The food was good, but not excellent. For that, the prices were on the more than average side. All in all still the best choice for a family with young kids in Barrydale!

Skip the tourist traps. Feed the carp. Excellent waterfront surprise with caffeine and cake to match.

Make sure you stop here for breakfast, lunch or a snack if you're in the neighborhood. The setting is perfect - next to a pond full of carp which race up to the railing when you toss them some bread - the service warm and friendly, and the food divine. Two of us had the chicken cheesecake and it was... More

Have visited this cafe in the past so another visit was required as the cheescake is exceptional. Friendly, efficient service from Hanette, the owner, despite the fact her cafe had been ransacked that morning, she had it up an running in no time. She also secured us a booking for dinner that night in the town at Mez.

We stayed at Blue cow barns and had our breakfasts and lunch on one day at the cafe. The food was all freshly prepared exactly as we had asked for it and nothing was too much trouble. The terrace overlooks a small lake full of fish, which we were given bread to feed, and an amazing variety of birds. Stunning... More

We came across this unique cafe completely by accident. If you are driving from Hermanus to Oudtshoorn then this would make a great place to break your journey. To be honest expectations were not high as we drove through Barrydale and we definitely did not expect delicious food and such a welcoming gregarious and talkative hostess. Try the chicken cheese... We approached Barrydale on a road trip of the Cape and were hoping to find a good place to have breakfast. We decided to follow the signs to The Blue Cow, a few hundred metres off the main road ... and we're so glad we did! Although initially we weren't sure when we pulled into the car park, yet it... We were looking for somewhere to eat and found a gem at the end of the road through the town of Barrydale. Took some finding but do not be put of by first sightings. Once you get inside what a change in surroundings. You have a pond full of carp which you get a slice of bread to feed them.... More

I have now been here twice, the second time because I had such a wonderful experience when I came with friends, that I just had to return. This unassuming little building hides a foodie heaven. Savoury chicken cheesecake - OMG, this was incredible, so good I ordered it the next time I went too! Everything everyone ordered was beautifully presented,... More

We stopped at the Blue Cow for a quick coffee, but ended up not wanting to leave the enchanting place. The Blue Cow is a kuier plek, with Hanneke bustling around, with a story to tell each guest. The Apple pie honestly was the best we ever tasted, and it was presented beautifully with an ice cream rose and a... More

Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.
