We had dinner and breakfast as paying hotel guests. We enjoyed both and found staff polite and attentive on both occasions. Food was very good and we never felt rushed.

Beautiful estate but the rooms are extremely old fashioned and not very fresh-looking. I'm sure it was all luxurious in the 80s but now it just needs a complete refurbishment. Dinner was the biggest disappointment with high ambitions but in the end just an example of English boring food that tries to be something else

Merlin Waterson, architectural historian and author on heritage subjects recently wrote, “Hartwell is very different from most fashionable, luxury hotels. As a guest, it feels as though one is visiting a beautifully maintained private house which reveals its history in scores of subtle ways, through the architecture of different periods, the decoration and the pictures, many of which are relevant... My wife and I went to lunch there today 07/02 absolutely wonderful lunch definitely upmarket but worth every penny. This is the third time we have visited for lunch and twice for afternoon tea, not the sort of place you would visit every week but worth waiting for the right occasions.

My husband and I were given lunch at Hartwell House as a present, and we didn't know what to expect. The food was well crafted, the menu thoughtfully put together with either a choice of courses, or a set menu. It was beautifully presented, totally delicious, and something a bit special. The service was excellent from the staff - very... More

We were a party of four friends meeting for a Lunch at Hartwell House this week. We were wanting to choose a main course from the slightly more expensive Chefs menu on the right hand side of the folder we were offered. The waiter did not think this was possible but said he would ask. An under manager arrived and... More

The car park was quite full when we arrived. I was pleased to see the hill down to the hotel had been gritted. You can drop people off at the door. Upon arrival we were ushered through the Great Hall into a lovely lounge overlooking the gardens. We were immediately offered drinks which arrived promptly with nibbles and olives, shortly... More

A beautiful setting. A promising seat right next to the fire however we visited in January and the room was freezing cold! most of the guests in the room looked like they were shivering! we made the best of it and looked forward to our cream tea. The sandwiches were lovely and fresh but a little bit uninspiring , the... More

We went to Hartwell House for a celebratory lunch and were really impressed. We were warmly greeted and settled for an aperitif in one of the stunning public rooms, with amazing 18th century ceiling and fireplace, and paintings and glorious furniture to match. Wow! Then we had the Hartwell Experience Lunch - 6 courses, if you count the coffee for... More

We have eaten at Hartwell House on a number of occasions. It is conveniently located for family get-togerhers and we have had pleasant experiences there in the past. We visited just after New Year and enjoyed the same warm welcome, nibbles in one of the wonderful reception rooms and the same wonderful dining room. However, food was not up to... More
