Seriously...how this restaurant survives is a mystery. The view? Not so great on a December evening. And that leaves the food. Good idea....leave it! To start, the "Rhode Island" calamari...whatever that's supposed to be was basic fried calamari with no sauce even though it said garlic and oil. And it came fresh and chewy from a frozen bag you can... More

My friend and I went there for lunch today. The prices are high, but the food was good. The service was terrible. We waited 20 minutes for our order to be take (and there were only 2 other occupied tables and 2 wait staff). We had to ask for bread, and refills on the coffee. We had 2 salads, one... More

We visit Louie's every time we are in New York. It is a favorite and has never disappointed. We went for lunch this time, and the food was excellent as usual. However, the service was not as prompt as usual. We had to wait for everything, including our beverages. I had the special wrap of the day - it was... More

Lovely setting but very uneven. 1st visit - inside room. Very friendly and attentive service. Enjoyed ourselves despite high cost (I think it was $14 for a Martini) and a very obnoxious, drunk group of locals (other diners actually left because of them). Tasty meal. Next time, 2 days later, we chose to sit on patio. Indifferent, unfriendly, slow service.... More

I love Louie's. The food is good, the pier is beautiful. It's off the beaten path. The parking lot is on a steep hill across the street. Their specials are usually excellent as are the desserts. Definitely worth the drive on a nice day.

We went here for an early Sunday dinner after taking sailing lessons next door. The view out on the deck in the back was lovely. Right on the sound and you can walk out on the restaurant's pier. We had the fried calamari, crab-stuffed shrimp, and CT style lobster roll. The food was good but not worth the prices in... More

We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We were driving through the area and were surprised at the gorgeous views in the area. Originally we were looking for "cheap eats" but when we saw this place, and saw the menu, we decided to go budget on a different day. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and the clam chowder... More

This has become our local spot since moving to Port Wash. Love sitting in the cozy bar area on cold days in the winter, and out on the deck during the warm summer months! The shrimp & grapefruit salad only served at lunch is delicious. I wish it was also on the dinner menu! Dinner favorites are lobster roll &... More

Description
One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck.
When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.
