Visited Abyssinia again after a long absence. I had the Beyaynet'u, which is a combination of 5 vegetarian items. All of the items were very tasty and fresh. I really enjoy the unique flavors and spices. The best dishes were the Messir We't (berbera spiced lentils) and Shiro We't (berbera spiced split peas). The location is in an older strip... More

While only my second Ethiopian food experience ever, I chose to go solo while on a business trip to Rochester. I ordered the Abyssinian Special III for one, which had delicious lamb, chicken, and raw spiced beef, plus vegetable dishes in one platter for $14. The portions were generous, the tastes delicious and authentic. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and... More

We go to this place as often as we can. We used to visit them in their old location near Scio St, and then patiently waited as they closed down and prepared to move to their new location in the Mt Hope Plaza. The food is the best we've had - and we've tried Ethiopian food in Minnesota, Buffalo, Boston,... More

Abyssinia is in a strip mall - like so many other small, privately owned eateries. The food is absolutely authentic, with the only exceptions on the concise menu being the beer selection and soft drinks. The food descriptions don't really help much, but asking the server questions helps a great deal. We both ordered chicken dishes, mine was the Chicken... More

We ate here with 3 kids and 2 adults and really enjoyed it. We all shared a vegetarian sampler, enough for 3 adults, and it was delicious and plentiful. Kids each had their favorite and all of them loved the injera bread. Staff was friendly and accommodating. We would definitely go again!

Abyssinia Restaurant was always considered the best Ethiopian Restaurant in Rochester. However, for many years, it was in an out-of-the way corner of Rochester. It closed at that location, and opened up about a year later in a very convenient location. (A mall on Mt. Hope Avenue, just south of U of R Medical Center.) Then, tragically, the chef died.... We went for a dinner in a small group. I have enjoyed Ethiopian food and wanted my significant other to experience it. While the service was pleasant, timely and the staff helpful, the food left much to be desired. The injera bread (key to Ethiopian food) was very sour ( it need to be slightly tarty but lime sour means... More

Came with friends last week about 630, pretty dead for the most part. I ordered the chicken dish with lentils and greens. It was amazing. It was light on the chicken, but they gave you a bunch of bread. Which they also have gluten free buckwheat bread which is very good if you like buckwheat. About 745/8 it seemed to... More

I walked in at 12:05pm for lunch and there was no one inside. I said "hello" three times before someone came out of the kitchen. The place is dated, the carpet needs to be replaced. The heat was not on until about 10 minutes later. I ordered the tomato salad and requested "no onions" and the staff member laughed at... More

Yummy, yummy, yummy! Have been here a number of times while visiting my daughter in Rochester. I have visited a number of Ethiopian restaurants in various cities and this is the best so far. Don't understand how they stay in business though. Always empty, even on a weekend evening. Service is adequate, but not overly friendly. Will continue going here... More
