While we live in a semi foodie town in the southeast, we do not have access to a spanish tapas experience. Authentic? Nothing to compare it to other than Rick Baylee's in Chicago. But we enjoyed the evening in this hip young restaurant. DId we love everything? No. But with the tapas experience that is to be expected due to... More

We had a great meal at Mateo on 2/15 prior to seeing a show at DPAC. The food was outstanding. We shared small plates that consisted of dates stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon, roasted brussel sprouts, beet salad, bomba rice with duck, and the spare ribs in pepper jelly. All were fantastic with our favorite being the... More

This small restaurant gets great reviews from critics but I am underwhelmed. Tapas dining which I love, but didn't think the food was that good, portions were small for the price. I thought it was expensive. The clincher - handed us a dirty and badly stained dessert menu. Was very unappetizing. Never will go back.

My wife is gluten-free, and sometimes eating at restaurants can be challenging - but no such trouble at Mateo, the waiter was very well educated on the menu, and which items were gluten free and which could be modified. Happy to say we both enjoyed a very good Spanish dinner, fish, tapas, sardines, potatoes, and more.

We had dinner with another couple and sat at a high top table. The selection of food was great with the menu "posted" on a big chalkboard behind the bar. I believe many of the selections change daily and based on the season. Along with the food, we had no problem finding a drink(s) to go with dinner.

We were in Durham for a Duke BB game and went to Mateo's based on internet research. The good reviews were right on. This is an excellent tapas place. We were a little pressed for time because we were going to the game. Our server, John, was considerate and got our food to us in a very timely fashion. I... More

My wife and I went to Mateo in downtown Durham on a Friday and thought it was one of the best restaurants we have ever been to! We sat upstairs, which has a more date night feel, while downstairs is better for groups and a snack before a night in Durham. The atmosphere and decor both upstairs and down was... More

We knew nothing about this place and found it here on Trip Advisor. You directed us well, Trip Advisor community! We got there at 5:00 for way early dinner before a concert. Probably a good thing. This place looks like it gets crowded fast. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and specials and also suggested how to order --... More

This is a great small plate restaurant in Durham but like many of the city restaurant establishments, many tables are crowded next to a wall providing very close dining with other parties and little privacy. I have awarded the four rating to Mateo. If you like dining in tight quarters and a noisy bar on the opposite side of your... More

smallish menu for tapas. Everything is delicious, but too many prepared with pork, so is limiting. Noisy and uncomfortable seating, Pricey, but a hip and popular place
