Visited the ship whilst working away. Enjoyed the warm, welcoming proper pub vibe. Staff and punters alike were very friendly. There's a varied menu of pub grub as well as specials. They had a special french menu on whilst we were there which was very reasonably priced and tasty. The ale was good too, even though as a northerner I... More

My colleagues and I were in Chelmsford for the first time and The Ship was the closest place to eat near the theatre we were working at. We certainly couldn't have stumbled across a better, more inviting place. It is a warm and cosy pub with lovely staff, great food and a marvellous atmosphere. Couldn't recommend it enough.

A table was booked for eight adults, when we arrived at the appointed time the two small round tables with handwritten " Reserved " notes on them had been taken by other persons. This was eventually corrected by staff asking these people to move,so staff were aware we had arrived. As previously mentioned the tables were too small for eight... More

We do apologise but this day was very difficult for us as it was Remembrance Sunday and we are the nearest pub to the Chelmsford cenotaph so we were doing our best to cope. We also are sorry but we do not offer table Sevice . We hope you would try us again so we can show you our best... More

Sunday lunchtime is bustling and has a warm atmosphere. Lots of groups eating or just having coffee. I had the chicken pie, my husband the gammon, it was all very good except the chips, they were bland and dry. Unfortunately we did wait 25 minutes for food, but we weren't in a rush. It was a real shame mine was... More

Been quite a while since I've been to The Ship but it seems much the same inside. Lots of nautical stuff but still a nice traditional pub, with plenty of beers to choose from. Decided on fish and chips, which can be a bit of a lucky dip in pubs. Cod and chips here nicely done, good crisp batter and... More

I often eat at the ship at the weekend as their roasts are great but really pleased they have had another themed weekend. This time it was Greek. Just had a delicious lamb kofta stack (glad I got the last one actually). Hopefully they do more but the food and welcome nature of the pub is always good anyway.

A large English pub with a nautical theme and no beer garden ... And no qualified chef lol! This seemed to be a popular venue when we chanced upon it on our way in to Chelmsford so we popped in for a pint and lunch. The Titanic burger (about £8) was a half pound of tasteless meat. The chicken Caesar... More

The food is absolutely first class with such a wide selection to suit all tastes. The chef is quite adventuress as who would expect lamb tagine in a British pub!.The staff are very welcoming and mine host is a considerate gentleman. The decor lives up to its name.

A group of eight of us dined midweek. I had a chicken curry and it was grim. Lumps of pre cooked chucked in a thick gravy/sauce - not a veg in sight. I wasn't tempted by what my colleagues had either. Wouldn't go back.
