On arrival this place seems lovely. Its in a pretty Essex village and many people have said they had lovely meals here. So much so that you need to book in advance. Now.... The land lady was pleasant when we arrived and showed us to the table and offered drinks. They do offer tap water free (bonus) But... We booked... More

Delightful venue offering very pleasant surroundings inside and a quaint beer garden. Excellent service, and the food we had couldn't have been better. Good choice of ales too, although the ambient music could do with a little updating! No bar meals, snacks or sandwiches, or much for vegetarians as such..not a problem if you are there for a proper meal... More

The food is ok, not really up to gastro-pub standard but reasonable enough. A bit too much reliance on the deep fryer for some of the things, such as the bubble and squeak cakes. What lets the place down is the service - oh, its so slow. Its not as if it was that busy, its just that no-one seemed... More

A spur of the moment decision when passing through the village. A reasonable variety on the menu but prices were at the high end for every item. Typical Sunday offer (the ubiquitous tyranny of the Sunday roast) with some other choices but no smaller options. Plumped for fish and chips. Chips were nice, fish also. Batter was a bit wet,... Visited on Easter Sunday - disappointed that roast lamb not on the menu. Service was slow and staff inattentive; some of the crockery was chipped (wouldn't sell in a charity shop). Food was average but, at £25 per head for 2 courses, expensive. Will not return.

I can't get enough of this place. The food is always outstanding, the menu is well thought through and there are always plenty of specials available. The atmosphere is welcoming and the pub and garden are well maintained. It is the perfect place to take friends or family when they visit and they are always impressed.
