Based on a recommendation from the hotel we stayed at we booked a table at Birdies. The food was excellent, however the lobster was off the menu - something I was looking forward to. We had the skate and fruits of the sea, followed by...chocolate mousse and creme brulee - which was probably the best creme brulee I have had in a long time. The only negative was the speed in which the food came out, for what was meant to be an evening out with good food and wine we were all done and paid in just over an hour and for us that spoilt the eveningMore

Birdies had been recommended to us and we had no idea of their offering. On arrival we were given a wine list and after a while the waitress returned to ask what we wanted to drink. I replied that we would be having wine but...only when we had decided on our food so could we have the menus please? With this we were directed to a chalk board behind us which apparently was the menu. It comprised Beef Wellington, Monkfish, Fruits de Mer, Lamb and two Lobster dishes. As we looked she advised us that lobster was off and its replacement was skate. Really? Skate as a replacement for lobster?? It would also have been helpful if the menu had been pointed out to us at the start. We dithered at the limited list, considering walking away, but eventually I had monkfish and my partner lamb. We should not have worried because both were excellent. Buoyed by this success we decided, against our normal practice, to have a sweet. One pear tiramisu and one orange and almond trifle. Disaster. The tiramisu was wet and lacking in mascarpone or decent texture, the trifle was shaving cream on top of a few sweetened wet orange bits with a couple almonds on top. Rubbish. At clearing the waitress asked whether all had been well and we made it clear that the sweets were very poor. Her response was laughter. Do Birdies really provide dreadful sweets as a joke? Certainly no apology or attempt to find out what had gone wrong. One last thing I had intended to have a white Sancerre but none was on the wine list. Instead there was a Touraine that was “Sancerre in all but name.” Wrong, wrong, wrong. A good white wine but a travesty to compare to Sancerre.More

Compact but very atmospheric restaurant. Limited choice on menu which suits us. Food was delicious and service was exemplary. Can’t wait to visit again.

I had walked past Birdies several times and there was just something about the place that made me want to visit, finally got a table with a friend on a Monday evening and as I walked in I just felt happy to be there, with...just a few tables it felt relaxed and the decor was so cute and welcoming, staff were efficient, friendly and attentive. The food was so tasty, being a little fussy I was limited on menu choices but I knew that before I visited, so do check out the sample menu before visiting. All three courses were fabulous and I left feeling very content , would definitely like to go back and recommend a visit if you like French food!More

A group of us dine here for our annual jolly. The food has always been very good. A place to go if you enjoy seafood. The oysters and the Assiettes de Mer were good and plentiful. The catch of the day ( Gurnard) which was...my choice was exceptionally well done. and a good sized portion too. They have Nice wine list to suit the seafood and the staff were helpful and polite.More

Lovely meal with a table for three in the window. Unrushed and good service. Table d’hote menu was really good. Good seafood and vegetarian food. A lovely experience.

Absolutely disgusted! My 50th birthday was July 8th. My husband had booked Birdies and the whole stay in Whitstable around the fact I had always wanted to eat here. He arranged our 3 grown up children to meet us there as a surprise. The first...we knew the restaurant was closed was when they rang him to say there was a note on the door to say it was closed. . No text, no phone call, no comms at all to advise of the closure. I understand fully that in times of COVID there maybe unexpected closures but surely a member of staff could have texted to let us know so we had time to make an alternative arrangement? The upshot was we were unable to get into any other local restaurant as there were 5 of us and we ended up with an Indian takeaway in our hotel room. I wrote to Birdies by letter as they have no website on July 10th expressing disappointment but understanding to the situation and to date have not received the courtesy of any acknowledgment. Hence the review here, this is the first time I have ever left a bad review anywhere on social media but I do believe 6 weeks is ample time to reply. We were so disappointed & simply cannot believe that the management of this restaurant are so arrogant as to not seemingly give an iota. Beyond disappointed with the whole unfortunate experience & attitude. A 50th birthday to remember for all the wrong reasons.More
