A group of 6 ex college friends went here for lunch. There is clearly a well rehearsed sequence to the whole service experience. We started with predrinks and “amuse bouche”. Then our order taken and shown to our table. All the food was exquisitely presented in typical boutique portion sizes. Service was relatively slow but not a problem, as it gave us time to digest each course including desert, we spent nearly four hours at the restaurant. We used seasonal discount vouchers to keep the price below £50 a head

Dined for lunch and all our food was ok but just a little lacking and didn’t meet our expectations. My Scallops were delicious but slightly over cooked. We had the fillet of Beef which was also over cooked and not the best cut of fillet either. The desserts were very good. Service throughout the day really let the place down. On arrival our coats were not taken and we had to wait for 15 minutes before we gave up and my husband went to the bar to ask if we could order some drinks. Finally when we ordered drinks our coats were taken. No meal checks were done during service and at the end of our meal my husband ordered tea with an Eccles cake. Our tea came but we had to ask for the Eccles cake after waiting for 10 minutes. When it came to pay we had to pay at the bar too which was a little annoying. Overall an average experience.

Birthday treat from the better half and what a great night it was. Wanted to give 4.5 stars, I'll explain: Friendly welcome and nice atmosphere in the cocktail bar. Great local beers and Manhattans up there with the best of them. Little snacks served whilst perusing the menu were gorgeous. Opted for the 4 course Gourmet menu, with the kitchen allowing us to switch deserts. All courses were fantastic. The rhubarb trifle desert was the best we've both ever eaten, and we've been to quite a few similar places. The lamb main was a little on the small side, but very tasty nevertheless. Finished off with a cheeseboard to share - top notch. Created our own wine pairings and the sommelier was great. Punctual and informative. While waiting for a taxi we had a couple more drinks in the bar, to finish off a great evening. The Old Fashioned was very good. Only criticism really was when it came to payment. Two people in front of us had complained about incorrect bills and overcharged service, which resulted in reductions being given. Ours was also wrong. A little sour note, but I would assume an off day. It wouldn't stop me returning, but could others. Please send me some Frozen rhubarb desserts to have at home!

We stayed at Northcote this weekend for a good friend's birthday and booked a room and dinner on Saturday night. Check in and staff, room, all Excellent and the evening started very well. Room beautifully appointed and very quiet, as usual. We had dinner booked for 8:30, and the Northcote requested we went down for 8pm. Things started to go wonky in part from here. We waited quite some time to order a drink, then, waited a long time for it to come. 8:30 came and went, still sat in the bar. We finally ordered our food, but waited in the bar. Finally, we got asked to go to the table, at 9:15, only 1 drink ordered in that time, not for want of trying. We sat at table, for another 10-15 mins, before dinner began. And, the good began. The food, was, as expected, (certainly given the price), excellent. But, then, another big wait between courses.... By 10:15, course 3 had arrived......... And we mentioned to the restaurant manager that it really wasn't going that great. Great food, ruined but very, very slow service. Gracefully, the restaurant wavered or wine bill, was greatly appreciated, and our remaining meal was very, very beautiful. The bed in our room, room 23, was very tired svs soft and can probably do with a change, but was a moderate grumble in truth. Breakfast was great, great staff, though, waiting 10 mins to pay our bill at the end of our stay, probably highlights the current issue with Northcote. They have great, great staff, but, just not enough to keep the standards of service in line with the great food. When, as a customer, you pay ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ, you expect the best food and the best service, and sadly, despite the teams efforts, it missed the mark. Hence the average score overall.

First time back at Northcote since the lockdown. Our experience was, as it always has been in the past, fantastic. The staff were all very friendly and attentive, the lunch was excellent and very good value - we had four courses and we really enjoyed each and every one and the ambience was such that we both forgot for an entire afternoon that we are all living through such strange and difficult times. Considering this was the opening day for the restaurant all concerned should be very proud of themselves - thank you.

The food was excellent but the whole experience was not to Michelin standard. Over 100 people in one room banquet style menu, staff were rushed off their feet. large wine list but no time to study it properly before first course was served. We felt we were part of a coach trip having an evening meal. All staff were polite and knowledgeable except for one very arrogant waiter when asked a question about my fish course he shrugged and looked confused and told me I had just eaten venison which I politely told him I didn't eat meat, he said he would check the ingredients and come back to me but he never did! Fortunetly we asked another member of staff the same question and he was able to answer our querie without having to ask anyone. The arrogant waiter ignored us all evening he didn't ask us if we would like the cheese course but served everyone else around us, we were left watching everyone else eat. By 10.15 we were very tried having arrived at 6.30 it was a long evening, our coffee cups had been placed in front of us for quite a while but no sign of coffee, we saw another couple get up to leave and we quickly followed, we spoke to them in the bar area and they were not keen on the banquet style layout either or the service. It's a shame as the food was lovely. If staffing is the issue then a smaller dining capacity would have a more relaxed atmosphere and quality of service and ambiance would perhaps be improved.

This review covers two meals in the Michelin quality restaurant (separate review of hotel). We had been prepared that due to staffing in the brigade there would not be an A la Carte option on day two, but a different tasting menu. The dinner menu is designed for leisurely dining so allow two and half to three hours so advised to be there at 6.30 for canapés and that there was a single sitting. Arrived early as did most guests for a drinks at the bar or on the terrace. Service here was slightly slow, canapés arrived and were the same both nights but good. Shown to our table just after 7. As the evening progressed service slowed, as the number of staff serving reduced. This left you with long periods when you looking at used crockery. The food is outstanding, in appearance and taste. My partner is allergic to Soya, (preadvised) and her courses looked identical to mine on the few occasions when a change as necessary. Usually when they clear the bread plates etc the table has the crumbs removed, this did not happen on night one but did pn the second. It was clear that as the evening progressed the staffing levels fell, impacting service, you could see how the meal was progressing as you watched the service work around the dining rooms which were full. On the second night even the night receptionist/manager was involved in carry out trays to help the dwindling serving staff. By about 10.15 on each night we were waiting to be offered tea, coffee ( or cheese board) we were ready to hit our bed so we passed on these options along with petit fores Absolutely understand the issues with hospitality staffing and we were keen to support this by booking UK short breaks. The establishment did warn regarding some of there attempts to overcome this but perhaps that should reduce the number of covers so that good service could be given. The restaurant charges a service charge of 12% on everything by adding to the bill I am usually in favour of this but when the service is below standard there is doubt in my mind on whether it should be added. If I rate the elements of the food is 5 location 4, ambience 3(overcrowded) service 1 to 2. Overall value for money 2/3 We had looked forward to this special treat and unfortunately it will be remembered for the negative issues rather than delightful food.

We ordered the Northcote at home which arrived on Friday ÂŁ120 including delivery for what we hoped would be a very nice and not cheap experience in these challenging times. Unfortunately the main course was missing one of the main flavour components, the marrowbone crust. We could have ordered a similar at home experience from other cheaper on places, but wanted to understand if the reputation was desererved. The fish was excellent, the onion soup and toastie good but nothing special, i cannnot comment on the main course as we did not have the full dish and the dessert was again good but not exceptional. I have been in contact re the missing ingredient and been offered a refunfd of ÂŁ15. Whilst this is a nice gesture, we spent a lot of money for a special evening and have been let down. That dish wouldn't have been sent out from the kitchen had we been in the restaurant. ÂŁ15 doesnt really cut it.

We always enjoy the food at Northcote and this visit was no exception. A well balanced menu which catered for my wife’s dietary preferences. We opted for the 4 course tasting menu with wine flight and rated all the dishes as very good or excellent with the quiche entrée the stand out plate, closely followed by my lime coconut dessert. My initial doubts about the proposed wine flight proved unfounded as it turned out to be just perfect – so congratulations to the sommelier for trying something different. The only small grumble from me was the slow pre dinner service in the bar area which also happened on a previous visit but perhaps we were just unlucky.

As a family we have been so looking forward to our lunch at Northcote, which we booked over 3 months ago but sadly our experience was one of two halves. As for the food, we couldn’t fault it - it was just lovely and all we hoped it would be. However our experience was badly affected by the service and completely unreasonable waiting times. We had 3 courses and the meal took over 4 1/2 hours. We had been at the restaurant for 90 minutes before we received our bread and then had to wait about an hour between each course. Our plates once finished were left dirty in front of us; we had to ask for our main course dishes to be removed after half an hour of finishing. When we finished our drinks we were not asked if we wanted any more and had to grab staff to ask. The water that was given out was really warm, etc etc. Now I will say the staff were lovely and no shortage of them they were just overwhelmed by the amount of tables in the restaurant and outside they needed to service so they were unable to service anyone well. When we went to pay we were not even asked if everything was ok. We mentioned that over 4 hours for a three course meal was just too long and that we found it disappointed because the food was lovely and that the waiting time between courses had really dampened our experience we were told that they understood it must have been frustrating. No apology. 10/10 food 1/10 service I strongly suggest you reduce your covers and give your guests the experience they are paying for.

We went for a special evening with John Williams who is the Head Chef at The Ritz London to launch his cookery book. All dishes served on the night had been prepared by Lisa Goodwin-Allen and her talented staff, using the recipes from John's book. The whole menu was stunning, and any restaurant chef who can serve 60+ souffle at the same time, all looking equally stunning, is a magician in my book. All staff at Northcote are 'with the program's and you get the feeling when you talk to them that if you cut their arm off and look inside, it would have 'Northcote' running through it like a stick of rock. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The food was fantastic - I had the vegetarian tasting menu and my partner had the normal one. However, despite pre-booking and the tasting menu being the only thing served, the dinner service ran more than an hour late. We arrived in the lounge bar, as requested, at 7.30pm and we did not sit down for dinner until just after 9pm (instead of 8pm as booked). Our first course arrived at about 9.15pm. We are lucky enough to have been to a variety of Michelin starred restaurants before and this has never happened as this is not the service you pay for. It was not just the delay, but also how the staff managed it. We had to actively ask about when we would be able to go through for dinner, we were not given updates. There was also no attempt at mitigation, for example, the staff could have apologised for the delay, brought us complimentary snacks / soft drinks to keep us happy while we waited. We did mention the delay at the time and also when we checked out and no apology was offered. When we did get through and sit down, we ordered some wine by the glass, but we were not asked which size we wanted - we were just given the largest most expensive glasses. Finally, breakfast the following day was prompt but the servings were small and not particularly great.

We visited again during Obsession on the night of Stephen McLaughlin. The meal was tremendous and the wine pairing was excellently matched. All quality produce prepared and presented beautifully. The mushroom ravioli and the assiette of pork were both particular favourites. Detailed information was provided by the staff on the food of each course and the wine and it was interesting to talk with the chef after the meal. We had a room in the lodge for the night which was immaculate and the shower and bathroom extra special. Attentive service and quality food at breakfast enhances this five star experience.

My partner and I had lunch today and had a wonderful experience. We were greeted well and given the drinks menu - the only thing I would suggest is to have a sparkling English wine or Champagne by the glass on that drinks menu. Regardless of this, I still had a glass of champagne because the bar man was excellent and sold it to me. Great up sell! The service in the restaurant was excellent and the food was delicious, if I had one small comment , the lamb wasn’t rendered enough but was still very tasty. The rice pudding was to die for. The two guys in the restaurant were faultless in their service and we loved our lunch. I would give 4.75 if I was able to. I work in a Michelin star restaurant so I was lovely to see the quality.
