First visit, nice staff , nice beer, lovely building. My friend and I shared pigs in blankets and crackling. He had a hot pot type pie with mash. I had chicken and tarragon with crispy shallots, lovely. Nothing left would certainly give it another go.

This place used to be my number one for food in Thame, but overpriced for just drinks. Now they've swapped the steaks and exotic meat menu for cheap pies, whilst improving the quality (and reducing the price) of drinks. I'd now give this place 5/5 for drinks and service, and 3/5 for food. Hence 4/5 overall.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I am glad you found the service and drinks to your satisfaction. We have had many good responses with regard to our pies and am sorry if yours did not live up to the expectations we hold. Please come in and try something from our Snack range which is quite... I'm not sure if the menu is the same every day but when I visited it was pies, pies, pies! The venue obviously sets itself up as a purveyor of pies and they did not disappoint, the moo and blue pie had lovely tender meat pieces in and a hint of stilton coming through too - surrounded by (but not... Now in fairness it is advertised as a speciality pie pub, but that is all they have on the menu. Service was fairly slow, but the pies very tasty. However the extras that went with them weren't great, and pretty expensive. Great if you want a pie and a pint, but don't expect chips!

Truly delicious! Yummy pies! Would recommend the Heidi pie or the Chicken of Arogan! Friendly and welcoming! Well worth a visit.

My first visit to this newly refurbished pub. It has a ghost that we didn't see, cheerful & helpful staff, all four of us had a different pie which we all agreed were delicious, all the pies have imaginative names, I had The Captain Nemo full to the brim with tasty fish & topped with creamy mash instead of pastry... My wife, me and our nine month old son decided to pop in for dinner. Nearly didn't, never been here before but thought we'd give it - and delighted we did. We needed a high chair and the landlord even went upstairs to lend us his own one from their young son. Great food, great value and really nice people.... More

We visit Thame every year for the annual food festival, and the Birdcage is the perfect place to stop for a drink and taste their delicious pies. Despite the fact it's heaving all day and it's possibly their busiest day of the year, the staff are all really friendly helpful and make you very welcome. We stayed for an evening... More

A perfectly nice pub. We did not eat, but did fancy some peanuts. We were told that they did not do peanuts but they did pork scratchings??? What is that about? They are awful and we wanted peanuts as, apparently, do many other punters. BRING BACK THE PEANUTS!!

Description
The Birdcage, serving award winning pies by Pieminister and premium Craft & Speciality beer is located in Thame's town centre. Built around 1300 it has fortunately retained its structural character and many of the elm beams, once covered in ancient plaster, have been exposed creating the historical atmosphere inside and out. During the Napoleonic wars, the Birdcage housed French prisoners who incidentally founded the local Masons. In fact, for many years it was used as a holding house for petty thieves and criminals, even lepers on the upper floors! Of course stories handed down from generation to generation have only enhanced its eerie reputation of being haunted by some of these troubled souls!
