The Departure is best on a nice day when you can sit outside and enjoy the view. The inside is good, the outside much better. The fare is light and sort of an "American-Japanese Tapas style dishes". Personally, I like it for sipping a few martinis. I gave it a 4 because I think their prices are a bit high,... More

Started with happy hour and then migrated to dinner. Had a rezzy and it was on the early side, but in spite of that, still didn't get a window table (never do, can't understand why). Our server was good, explained dishes well - including the spice level. We had a nice mix of pork, veggies, cocktails, wine, and dessert. The... More

Amazing food and atmosphere! Servings weren't huge, which was refreshing as it became possible to try several dishes. Roof top bar was really cool!

Fun Portland vibes, beautiful city view at night. Cocktails were DELICIOUS. The Seoul Spring cocktail was my favorite, I loved it so much I called the bartender for the recipe. Overall great experience, will return for sure.

Walking into the restaurant did feel a little like walking on to Space Mountain in Disney World and the view is quite nice, but if you are a true foodie, the food was a disappointment. The sushi was truly mediocre and a couple of the other dishes were average as well. Service was friendly and lots of energy in the... More

We went for Portland Dining month, and all ordered the special menu. The best part was the view from the deck before dinner. The space and ambiance was hip and cool, and definitely not "casual" or "comfortable." The food was ok, but certainly not with coming back for. The fact that they forgot 4 out of 6 of our entrees... After a group function at Departure earlier in the month, I was impressed enough with food, wine, service, and GF options to come back a week later. We could've made a meal from appetizers, and almost did: outstanding sushi selection, not mention tiger prawns and Brussels sprouts, and even a happy hour sake! Duck curry was a tasty and filling... A friend of mine took me to Departure and when I looked at the menu beforehand I thought this is going to be another one of these Asian restaurants with ok food. I am so glad I was wrong. The food was amazing. Very flavorful en even though you order small plates to share the portion sizes are decent so... More

Went here for dinner based on review from varoius websites and knowing the chef was a contestant on Top Chef. When we arrived at the elevator, I didn't realize the restaurant was on the top floor of the hotel. That had me worried. Most "scenic view" restaurants live solely on the view and terrible food. When we arrived at the... More

Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.
