Food and ambience

During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him. We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants. As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant. Two reasons we chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday. 1. Locally sourced food 2. Menu In a word - Outstanding! Located in the arts area of Lancaster, this restaurant has a very smooth vibe. The server immediately told us about their dedication to local...products, 90% of what is served being local. Real food. Love it. They start you off with a little "taste" of the chef's creation. Ours was a spoon of spicy tomato soup, presented beautifully along with a plate of two savory mini zucchini muffins and fresh foccacia bread. Whets and preps the appetite for what is about to come. We shared a Cesar salad - very good - served on chilled plates. It comes with local smoked limestone spring trout. I was concerned about bones, and much to my delight, there were none. It was fantastic. Dinner: I had the chicken breast on jasmine rice with ratatouille. My husband had the pork loin with this absolutely gorgeous tomato, smoked candy onion, cucumber, roasted corn goat mozzarella salad, reduction sauce. It was so refreshing. Decadent desserts: I had the tres leches w/ the fresh peaches. Yum. My husband had the oh so delicious dark chocolate pate with whipped cream. Umm.Good. We found the quality of the food to be simply spectacular and the prices very fair and reasonable. HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.More

A few years ago I visited this restaurant and made a return visit last week. What an amazing experience. Food was out of this world and the service exemplary. The restaurant says they visit small organic family farms in Lancaster County to source ingredients. The...food certainly tasted fresh. My wife loved the Shrimp and Grits and I had the Pork Belly with Fried Green Tomato's which was excellent. Good wine list and some craft beers are avialable. The decor is most appropriate for this old tobacco warehouse built in the 1880's. There is plenty of car parking space.More

We showed up here on a Saturday night without a reservation. We fully expected to be turned away. Instead, they found us a wonderful table outside in the garden. The service was perfect. The green tomato amuse was wonderful. We shared a garden salad that...was fresh and tasty. My husband had the chicken of the day which almost fell off the bone. They allowed him to substitute for a different potato than was on the menu. I had the lamb and ground beef kabobs. They were also wonderful. Even including the wine we had with dinner, the bill was very reasonable. If we are back in the area, we will absolutely go there again. Next time we will make a reservation.More

Service was great, the food unfortunately not so much… the pork belly & fried green tomato appetizer was the highlight of my meal, everything else was less than stellar… overall not impressed with the food & would not return.

My wife and I recently hosted our families and friends for our rehearsal dinner at John J Jeffries and the best way to describe the evening was simply top-notch! From the start to the end of the event, the service was friendly, attentive and responsive...to our group's every need. The food itself was spectacular and I am still dreaming about how good the Pork Belly Love appetizer was! The cocktails we ordered were also quite good and the overall ambiance of the event space is understated yet elegant. One of my favorite features was being able to take advantage of the lovely patio space for a cocktail hour style opening which helped everyone loosen up and enjoy each other's company before sitting down for the formal dinner. All in all, this was a truly fantastic evening and hassle-free experience. The event coordinator, Ladan, was very helpful in arranging logistics and in helping us plan the event. She will make sure your next event goes exactly according to plan! I would highly recommend John J Jeffries for your next public or private event!More

Hubby and I enjoyed our dinner. I had the Beef Tartare (wonderful) and he had the Pork Tenderloin in a morrocan inspired rub with white sweet potatoes. Who knew that there were white sweet potatoes? The dish was amazing! We tried to replicate it last...night and it was good. Service was very good; I appreciate that our server made sure that I understood that the Beef Tartare was raw without being condescending. She handled it perfectly.More

So first let me say ... Hunter provided excellent service. And the food was truly delicious. As soon as he mentioned the special was a NY strip ... I was in. My issue ... when I arrived, I was told the dining room was full...and that I could wait or be seated in the other overflow room. I was kind of surprised — full at 6:30? With a reservation? But with Covid I said okay. I walked in the room, a solo woman, to be treated by another solo woman. In my seat for 10 minutes I watched as one couple, and then another, was seated. I asked for the host and he noted one couple waited and when the other couple arrived, tables had opened up ... really? It didn’t seem tables would have turned for dinner at 6:40! It felt as if the single women were sent to the side room. And it didn’t feel good at all. I’m from NYC and honestly haven’t run into this before. I have in other places I’ve visited. Was it a mistake? Maybe. Maybe not. It’s a shame as it ruined my dining experience. I ended up dining all by myself. And I was excited because friends of mine really loved this resto and raves about it.More

We were thrilled with our Valentine’s Day experience! Such a cozy atmosphere, and our server was witty, attentive, and articulate, but not at all intrusive. Such a carefully curated menu for Valentine’s Day that was a delight from start to finish, although there were not...many options if you are a vegetarian who doesn’t like mushrooms. Also, the music was a bit strange for the occasion (Bob Dylan... Pink Floyd... haha!) Still, what a find!! We cannot recommend this enough! DELICIOUS!More

There is no children's menu. This is, as the previous response noted, an adult restaurant. I don't recall seeing children there.
