I stopped in the Anthracite Newstand while visiting family for the holiday. Wow! As soon as I walked through the door, saw the photo of Mamie & Frank, heard the banter of the staff, and smelled lunch cooking I knew this was a special place....A quick stop convenience mart at first glance, but in walking through the two aisles of snack foods I realized the store is a modern day local meeting place. Old time general store feel with lotto sales. Did not buy a lottery ticket even though I felt a buzz from the customers by the front cash register about the upcoming drawing. Still, I hit the jackpot just by coming into this sweet little place. I grabbed a bottle of PA Yuengling lager in the back counter area and eased up to the welcoming bar to enjoy a lunchtime break. One of the owners sons wiped the bar down as he restocked the beer cooler and the cashier teased him about missing out on all the home baked sweets she was going to take home. A few tables were full of locals chatting about a favorite tv show which added to the homey feel of the place. The menu placed high priority on good home cooked foods including chili, potato pancakes, and baked goods. Hot dogs and hamburgers are also featured as comforting old standby meals at this lunchtime grill. I enjoyed this place so much that I will make it a regular stop while visiting my family. Hope you stop in too and get a feel for the hospitality of a small town business full of friendly PA folks.More
We've stopped in at the Anthracite on several occasions to pick up some snacks or have lunch. On every occasion, the food has been great and the service was both friendly and efficient. I would recommend checking this place out if you're looking for something...on-the-go or for a meal.More
The service and atmosphere of this place are outstanding. The owners and staff really go out of their way to make sure your visit is memorable. The soups are all home made and are some of the best tasting I have ever had. I had...a very safe and comfortable feeling as I sat at the snack bar eating my meal. I cannot say enough about this place! It's absolutely fantastic. I recommend anyone and everyone should stop by the Anthracite to experience for themselves. I have been going there for almost 20 years now and have no plans of stopping. My rating for the Anthracite Newstand is 10 Stars Superb!!More

I recently stopped in for a pack of cigarettes on a trip to the area. I found the staff to be very friendly. While there I decided to order food because the menu looked delicious. I wasn't at all disappointed with the homemade food and...friendly service I received. They have everything you can need from snacks and meals down to soda or alcoholic beverages. I would highly recommend stopping into this local business if you ever find yourself in wilkes barre, Pennsylvania!More

I stopped in the Antracite Newstand to buy a six pack of beer during a recent stay at the Best Western Genetti and have to wonder about the two reviews that I just read. This looked like a hang out for losers and I can't...believe that the clientele hangs out there for the food.
In all fairness we did not eat there but I would be shocked if "they have the best food in the valley." The people sitting at the counter seemed to be doing more beer drinking than eating.More
