Myself and husband had a lovely dinner at the shoregate in the airy restaurant overlooking the sea. The duck and dessert was delicious. The only criticism is that the main course was brought out before we had finished the olives and bread. For £20 a main course, we would have like a slightly slower service to enjoy the experience. The Crail pottery side plates were a nice touch. We finished the drinks in the bar which unfortunately was quiet on a Saturday night. The bar could do with some more advertising as a lot of people don’t realise you can just go to the bar for a drink. It would have been nice to have some LED tea lights on the tables and slightly less tables to make it seem busier. Cocktails were amazing.

The Shoregate is well located on Crail Main street. It is a very new restaurant having recently opened. My wife and I live in Crail and visited for lunch. The decor is simple yet stylish. When we visited there was only one other table occupied so atmosphere was understandably a bit lacking; I am sure with more people it would have a good vibe. The wait staff were very friendly and eager to help. My wife ordered the artichoke custard for appetizer while I had the seafood bisque; both were well presented and tasty. We both had the herb crusted cod as an entree. It was delicious in a lovely mussel sauce. Pictures of the courses follow below. Shoregate is a welcome addition to Crail and fills a good dining void. As a constructive comment, the lunch menu (which is the same as the evening menu) needs to be at a lower price point to attract regular clients; even a fixed price menu would be better

We dropped in for a couple of drinks to the newly renovated Shoregate. We liked that the back bar has retained many of its original features with the log burner which will be great in winter. What I would say is that the bar area is not very comfortable. It’s all very wooden, no cushions and lacks a splash of colour. At £11 for a large glass of wine (albeit very good wine) I thought for a moment I was in London. The restaurant looks nice but again doesn’t look very comfortable, I wish they’d chosen some softer furnishings, everything is just so wooden. Whilst the menu looks lovely it’s extremely limited and needs to evolve pretty quickly. To entice the locals I’d strongly suggest a total revamp of the lunch menu which is just odd and again incredibly limited, albeit I’m sure very good quality. I wish The Shoregate the very best of luck and look forward to returning once things have evolved a bit.

This was our 3rd visit this time with friends. The staff could not have been more accommodating with our dietary requirements (a gluten allergy) and we experienced fantastic service throughout the meal. We started with drinks in the bar (great cocktails) then enjoyed a meal which was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. It's so good to have a restaurant of this standard in Crail. We will definitely be back.

A newly opened restaurant in Crail. It has replaced the East Neuk Hotel and has been tastefully updated. My husband and I went for lunch. Food was cooked to perfection, husband had seafood bisque and I had artichoke custard for starters we both had cod for our mains. Food was delicious and presented beautifully. I am not going to comment on price due to the current inflation we are experiencing, but it wasn’t cheap! Staff were friendly and helpful. It is great to have a new restaurant in Crail and we wish them every success for there new enterprise.

What a find this restaurant is ! Came upon it on a visit to Crail, and had the most excellent lunch in the really lovely refurbished bar. I had pressed rabbit and mussels which were both delicious, and my husband also raved about his scotch broth and plaice - which was the most delicious looking and well cooked plaice I have ever seen ! There is a lovely, relaxed atmosphere in the bar, with a wood burning stove, an excellent playlist and very professional and attentive staff. The toilets are spotless and the bar area is dog friendly. I really cannot fault anything about The Shoregate , and we will definitely be eating here again when we visit Crail. I just wish this restaurant was nearer to our home !

Excellent food and lovely waiting staff. However, they were all horribly let down by the Manager who lost them £58.00 service charge. This is because we ordered a bottle of dessert wine but queried the price as the drinks menu stated £8.00 per 125mls per glass and £40.00 for a bottle. We asked if the bottle was full (750mls) or half bottle (375 mls). Staff were unsure and the Manager came to the wine rack and till to check but did not come to our table. The bottle size was 375mls, so we assumed that the price of the wine would be adjusted accordingly (£24.00 for 375mls as per the glass size stated on the wine menu). It was not. We queried this and the Manager was called. Apparently there was a mistake on the drinks menu. Dessert wine is served in 75mls per glass not 125mls as stated. The Manger did not know why this mistake was made and refused to reduce the bill as we had drunk the the wine. We asked for £20.00 to be taken off. There was no appreciation of the issue of inaccurate pricing. The Manager’s people skills were appalling.

Had dinner for two Chateaubriand was tough and chewy not sure of the provenance of the meat or if it was just poorly cooked. Baby jacket potatoes were slightly undercooked also. On the plus side the vegetable were all cooked beautifully and the bernaise sauce was very tasty. The wine was also very good quality and service very good. I would maybe go back to shoregate but wouldn’t order an £85 steak again for two as the product was poor would perhaps look at lunch. There was a red flag when potatoes were so undercooked to the quality of product coming from kitchen. Unfortunately I couldn’t recommend this restaurant as top quality as in my opinion the steak was very poor.

Booked earlier in the day we dined, they shuffled things around so we could book earlier at 7pm. Service friendly and efficient, we had cocktails, shared the Chateaubriand and ice cream dessert. Generous portions , beef came with all the sides so seemed very good value. We would have liked more seafood and shellfish options but our meal was spot on. A great addition to Crail.

We enjoyed a fabulous light lunch at The Shoregate in Crail, today. The four of us shared the ‘Bookmaker’ Charcoal roast sirloin; Smoked ham hough fritter; Spring pea mousse; Terrine of partridge, plus Sourdough bread, whipped butter, which also came with a delicious rapeseed oil dip. All utterly yum and washed down with excellent lager. The staff were sweet and welcoming, and the ambiance in the dining room was cosy, yet light-filled. Here and the outside were packed with happy diners when we left. We look forward to coming back.

We had a great dinner in the newly opened and refurbished Shoregate Hotel. It certainly did not disappoint. The food was fab and was served by a friendly, efficient and attentive staff in beautiful surroundings. It also caters for children. Our granddaughter who is 11 months old had all her needs met. There is also a baby changing area which is ideal. The menu is sophisticated and may need regular reviewing to ascertain if it meets the needs of all clientele. We certainly enjoyed it very much.

I cannot agree with all the excellent reviews. The meal my wife and I had was to say the least mediocre. My wife had duck and I had lamb, neither of us were asked how we would like the dishes cooked. The duck was hard to cut and the lamb was over cooked and difficult to chew. Maybe the chef was having a bad night! This restaurant may be aiming at the tourist trade but I do not see the locals being regulars at the prices being charged

We went to the Shoregate on the recommendation of our hosts in Crail and how glad we were that we did. For a restaurant that has only been open for less than a couple of months it really has got its act together. The welcome, the decor, the staff, the food are all excellent and we would recommend the restaurant unreservedly. The food is freshly cooked and delicious. The portions are generous. The menu is small which for us is a positive as a little done very well is better than a lot done badly. Well done the Shoregate.

We had a great lunch at this beautiful restaurant which is right in the middle of Crail. Staff were very friendly and professional, the setting and interior was lovely and we very much enjoyed the food. The focus was on local produce and we enjoyed our meal very much. There was a good range of options, all with a modern twist on Scottish food, and I particularly emjoyed my pea velouté and fish roulade. There is no pressure of time so it was possible to have a leisurely meal. They also serve wine by the glass which given that we wanted different wines was helpful. We came away pleansantly full.

We have been travelling round Scotland for over a week and this was the best meal we have had anywhere. The three lovely young ladies serving were polite and professional and the food was exquisitely presented and extremely tasty. Highly recommended
