Stopped here on our way from Johnson City, TN, to Sulphur, OK, and we were so glad we did! Great service and even better food-don't forget the beans and slaw! Nice bar and waiting area upstairs-it took awhile to get a table, but there are...More

I was so excited to eat BBQ upon our arrival in Memphis. This came recommended and it was walking distance from our hotel. Staff was awesome. We ordered ribs and sausage. The ribs were dry rubbed and you could add sauce at your table. To...More

We had heard good things about the ribs but I was disappointed in the tenderness. We are from Texas so ribs FALL OFF THE BONE! The sauce was good touch of sweet and hot so we're the beans. No doubt Texas and KC ribs are...More

So glad you heard good things, but sad you were disappointed in your ribs. Our ribs definitely have a bite to them - they definitely shouldn't be tough, but don't fall off the bone. We love barbecue from all over as well. Had great barbecue...More

If you want ribs, go someplace else. We are from Texas and are used to smokey tender ribs that need no sauce. The ribs at the Rendevous were an assault on our palettes. I will try to describe them. The ribs had zero smokey flavor...More

Hi Chuck, We are so sorry you didn't enjoy your ribs. I can assure you that we don't boil ribs - not sure we even have pots large enough to do such a thing in the restaurant :). We cook our ribs over charcoal in...More

It seems that Rendezvous has gotten comfortable and is coasting on their reputation. Please be aware that this place has taken a MAJOR step down in my experience. I previously visited Rendezvous in 2004 and 2005 and raved to my friends back home how wonderful...More

So okay, yes, you will find this place in an alley. I get it. Not the most pleasant curb appeal. And yes, I agree with another reviewer that in the summer months, waiting outside is awful. But guess what, there is a HUGE bar above...More

The food is great but my favorite part of this restaurant is the atmosphere and the staff. I love that it's a little hidden but everyone knows about it!

Not really a fan of hanging outside in the heat in an alley to get in. I would say go late in the evening or in Spring or Fall. Miserable waiting with the kids. Dry rub is not my favorite but that is a personal...More

I don't believe they take normal reservations but I would definitely call for a large group. They have rooms big enough for 40-50.

The Rendezvous, founded by Charlie Vergos in 1948, started out as an 80 seat tavern serving ham and cheese sandwiches. When Charlie cleaned out the basement beneath his diner, he discovered a coal chute and started a barbecue legend. The coal chute gave Mr. Charlie a vent for his considerable talent over the grill. He developed a unique seasoning fusing his Greek heritage with spices he enjoyed from New Orleans. Mr. Charlie was a collector and hung antiques, memorabilia, and artwork on the walls. This, along with a soulful jukebox, lively waiters, and aromas from the kitchen helped him to create an atmosphere unequalled in the city of Memphis. Today, the restaurant is still in the Vergos family and run by Mr. Charlie's three kids. The ribs still taste the same as they did in the beginning. Ribs are the Rendezvous' specialty. Years ago, people started calling them "dry ribs" which is a terrible misnomer. The ribs are neither "wet" nor "dry." They are moist and juicy and come heavily basted in a vinegar solution that should be used for dipping, and they are sprinkled with our unique Rendezvous seasoning. Any use of sauce should be on the side. Most of the main dishes come with a 4 oz side of baked beans and a unique mustard/vinegar based cole slaw. Should you want additional sides, they may be purchased for only $1. While Rendezvous is famous for its ribs, don't overlook the other items on the menu. From the beef brisket to the pulled pork shoulder sandwich to grilled chicken everything is excellent and well seasoned. The newest item, the greek salad, is a recipe that comes all the way from the Vergos' village back in Greece. On your way out, pick up a bag of BBQ popcorn. The Rendezvous can handle parties as large as 300, call us for reservations. Reservations are accepted for 15 people or more during the week and 25 people or more on the weekend based on availablity. Our main dining area is in a basement. If you require elevator access please let our hostess know.
