The baked potato with chopped beef was humongous it covered the whole carry out tray. The owners were so friendly and even gave out good sized samples. And their interactions with the customers was a delight to see, I even saw a regular customer come...in a gave owner a pie/cake, and looked like this was something that occured frequently.More
Locally owned and operated by Caroline and Arthur. The best Barbeque in southeast Texas. If you are not hungry, don't go there. You will get enough que to fill you up now and have some left to carry out for later.
I've heard about this place for the better part of year by lots of friends and finally decided to try it. I heard it was the best by far and the sauce was out of this world! I wanted to be impressed but I just...wasn't. I ordered sliced brisket and ribs, a pound of each. The total was almost $30 which is fine for good bbq. I was there shortly after opening at 10:45 and the brisket I was given was left from the night before or possibly had been frozen as it was was cold and had to be reheated in the microwave. Where most brisket is sliced thin with the fat rendered, this was thick chunks with lots of fat more like a pot roast. It did taste good however.
The ribs, although tasty were tough. They were pork spareribs and even though they were well seasoned and had good smoke they were chewy and had to be torn from the bone and a little dry for having just came off the pit. There are two kinds of sauce available, one for meat and one for sausage links. Both are based on 88 cent bottled hunts bbq sauce. (I watched as the mixed it in a slow cooker on the back counter) Doctoring a bottled sauce is fine as long as it tastes good and this was decent, not memorable but fine.
In all honesty I have a feeling I was either here too early or happened by on an off day. Texas BBQ is one of those foods that either IS or IS NOT and Carolines today happened to fall in the IS NOT category. When people know BBQ you just cant "phone it in" I'll wait a while before going back and maybe try going on a Saturday next time and hope today was just a fluke.More
