Sandwiches reminded of Scholtzky's. But the rest of the place was a dive, smelled of sewage, and staffed by sullen burnouts.

It is tradition to stop at Alvin's anytime our family drives through San Marcos. I grew up eating these delicious sandwiches in Georgetown, Tx but we no longer have Alvin's in our town.

This is definitely a local hole in the wall. The ambiance is not great, all the furniture looks 20 years old. However, the sandwiches were excellent! Very fresh and delicious and totally inexpensive. The staff was very friendly and helpful explaining their menu to us. We don't come to San Marcos very often but I'd we come again, we will... More

I bought 4 Large Salvations for takeout which totaled almost $40. Using my card to pay, Zeus asked if I wanted to leave a tip. I thought that was kinda pushy when he did nothing but take my order. I said no and that I had that covered. I had a tip in my pocket for them but they didn't... More

Delicious sandwiches on their signature bread - limited choices but it doesn't matter because all their sandwiches are tasty. Institution has been around for a while and has even expanded and taken over the space where the pizza place used to be located. Cozy graffiti covered booths are fun and a conversation piece for friends and non-students.

We practically lived at Alvin Ords when we went to TxState. Since leaving, we also make it a point to stop by on our way through town. They expanded the restraint but the vibe is still the same, casual, small town sandwich shop. The bread is fantastic and the menu is small. My husband always gets the Salvation, while my... More

I have no idea how long this place has been here. It was here when I arrived in 1986, so at least that long, but I'm guessing at least into the 70's. The place has a college atmosphere (the campus is just across the street after all) and it was the place to order sandwiches when I lived on campus.... More

Very good sandwiches! Usually try to visit when we go to San Marcos and it never disappoints. Order the Salvation and you will not be disappointed. It is an icon in town and much better than eating a "chain" restaurant.

I went to High school in San Marcos, and one of the things that sticks in my mind is Alvin Ords. Consistently good, so much better that Schlotsky's, and the funky shop is full of old writing on the wall from so many years of customers. I usually call ahead to place my order so that it's a quick in... More
