Had a great brunch yesterday. We were honoring a mother-to-be with a ‘sprinkle’! Our reserved table was waiting for us (party of 7). Service was very good. Our waiter’s name was Stephan. He was attentive and helpful ! Then to top it off the brunch...menu was plentiful and we all had delicious food and drink! Thank you for helping us celebrate!More
A group of us dined on Sunday at Local Roots. The food was very yummy. It was very full and unfortunately they had run low on some dishes. We tried the Asparagus Soup (so good), chacuterrie board, Redfish (delicious!), steak and the burger. Everyone enjoyed...their meals and the wine and local IPA's. We were way too full to look at the dessert menu. Cindy was our server and she was such a gem. It had a family vibe to the place.More
Some of the best food we had in Roanoke, service was great too! We tried the montecristo which was excellent and the grits bowl which was such a unique flavor experience unlike any we’ve had before. All great, and the drinks were delish as well....The location is great too, lots of cute shops in the area.More
Went for Easter brunch with family. We were warmly greeted when walking in and the excellent service continued until we left. We felt there were plenty of options on the menu, especially for a holiday meal Delicious food and a cozy atmosphere.
Called to make a reservation for 7, and was treated very roughly on the phone. Told that they could make the same money with smaller tables, so they had no interested in our table for 7, and just hung up on me. Rude. If this...is an indication of the service quality I am not sure that I want to go.More
So, my wife and I meet our daughter and a family friend in Roanoke to go to a concert. They drove up on Sunday night from Virginia Tech (~1 hour) and we came in from Charlottesville (2 hours). My wife had researched and found this...spot months before our arrival and booked a table for us. During the intervening weeks, she received several reminders and confirmations of our visit. We show up and the "host," seemingly overwhelmed by a dining room that was 1/3 full, asks us if we have a reservation. We tell him our name, etc. He informs us he doesn't have a reservation for us. We're confused and a bit unsettled since we don't really know the town. He suggests we may have booked the Local Roots that's in Ohio. Then he sticks his tablet in front of - passive aggressive, at best - to show us we're not on his list and tells us they're fully booked and can't serve us without a reservation. He then walks away in huff to serve some tables. My wife digs through her texts and finds the confirmation text. She shows him the text confirming our reservation. And he seems to get even angrier at us, like this is our issue, not his. Visibly frustrated at our desire to eat at his restaurant, he snaps at us and mumbles something about not know how to fit us in, etc. and seats us at a table in the back. So poorly done. This dude made a terrible first impression and even when confronted with the fact that he was wrong, didn't relent or change gears or apologize. Just stayed in ass-mode. Fortunately our server was great and the other folks who saw much of this go down were very friendly and helpful. The food was great and it's always a pleasure to enjoy a slow food restaurant. The irony was, after ate we walked out of the dining room and it was emptier than it was when we entered! There was never an issue for a table. Also, having heard from others that they were having a tough time keeping reliable staff, they may want to explore why those folks aren't showing up, given the host's lack of composure and professionalism. It would seem if you were hungry for customers you wouldn't treat them like annoyances at the door. The host's attitude cost this review a star. Just to be clear, I've been in the food world for quite a while, as a James Beard Award winning food writer/editor and as a marketer. I'm not coming at this from as some naïve innocent. I understand it's tough for restaurants these days. That's why we continue to support them whenever we can. But it's absolutely self-destructive to treat patrons like they're the problem before they even sit down.More
Came to this place for the first time in March of 2022. Food was decent, service was really good except for evidently intoxicated man who claimed to own the place and kept attempting to engage us in political conversation. Visited restaurant again in March 2023,...same story. Food was tasty, Erica, the bartender, did a great job, and the same apparently intoxicated man with long hair was parading around claiming to be the proprietor and ranting about Leonardo DiCaprio’s social initiatives.More
Local Roots was a hit. The menu was accommodating yet simple. We had the NY Strip and it was cooked as requested. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxed and enjoyable all around. One thing I think they should do is include on the menu that...they offer deserts and a full bar. We almost didn’t make reservations because of that, but I’m glad we did.More
This was my favorite restaurant in Roanoke during a three-day visit. Really nice place, quiet, good ambience, good service. Excellent cocktails, and the gnocchi main course was delicious. Diners should recognize that food-to-table isn't for everyone, but if you're into it, this is a fine...choice.More
We had an early reservation and showed up even earlier. We had to wait for them to open at 5, and were seated immediately. Service was instantly very friendly and engaging. We had made an Open Table reservation and learned on showing up that there...is a Local Roots somewhere in Ohio…so make sure that you are signing up for the one in VA. The menu was interesting, lots of fascinating choices. For a starter I got the Korean chicken wings. I’d never heard of Korean wings before, but I have had Thai wings…turns out this was basically the same thing, with a Korean-style sauce. These three wings were stuffed to bursting and quite good. They arrive really, really hot, so watch yourself. My partner went with the butter board and the cheese plate. The three different butters were excellent, with three different breads. The cheeses also were quite good. My partner’s main was the veg gnocchi, and I went with the jaeger schnitzel. Unfortunately, they brought out the completely wrong dish for her. They were quite apologetic, and what appeared to be a manager showed quickly up to apologize. She later returned and offered a discount on my partner’s dish and a comp dessert. We had not asked for these, but accepted. We ended up with a 30% discount on her main and a free dessert. Not bad, proactive customer service. She liked her veg gnocchi, eating it all. Having lived in Germany for almost eight years, I know what genuine jaeger schnitzel is all about; this wasn’t quite there. The coating was closer to chicken-fried steak…which I also happen to love. You usually get plenty of jaeger sauce with a jaeger schnitzel, but there wasn’t too much here for the two pieces. They were tender and tasty and yes, I ate it all. It came with German potato salad, which had a great texture and was tangy. For dessert my partner went with the flourless chocolate tort. It was chocolately-intense, very much so. I went with the warm apple dumpling, with a scoop of blueberry ice cream. My dumpling was good, but wasn’t even close to warm; it was fridge-cold, not having been heated at all. Given the earlier problem with the main dish earlier and the staff's reaction to the mistake, I decided not to make an issue of it. The dumpling was quite good, even cold, the apple tender and the crust chewy and thick, but I was so full I finished only half of it. Bottom Line: This was a nice place, cozy, good choice of music, parking right out front, with friendly and engaging staff…and good, interesting food. They made a mistake, not a big deal, really, and immediately made good on that without us making the slightest noise about it. If in town again, we may just return.More
I wanted to like this place...but service was VERY slow. 75 minutes from being seated to our brunch being served. Our server was apologetic...but the experience was ruined. The food was OK...Most of the menu featured a Virginia Ham which I thought was way too...salty. The Hollandaise Sauce was tasty. I'll take a pass next time.More
The service & the food were BOTH outstanding. We had the lovely butters/bread, shishito peppers with soy sauce and bacon ( oh, the bacon!!), Porch chop and chicken. Everything was fantastic. We really weren't going to have dessert BUT.... the chocolate cheesecake and bread pudding...were both A MA ZING!!! We highly recommend and would go back. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟More
We visited Local Roots for dinner after enjoying breakfast here several months previously. Unfortunately we were ignored for 15 minutes and then served warm water. Our appetizer of hummus and veggies centered on a tasteless unseasoned apparently house made unappetizing glob of “hummus”. This was...followed by the pork chop entree for my husband…poor quality meet with a tasteless unseasoned and poorly presented serving of purple potatoes. I have to say my pasta was delicious and they honored my request for a vegetarian entree. However overall a very disappointing meal.More
Cute place. Good message and good partnership with local farms. Food was spot on. Everything was perfectly cooked and just right.
