The Tavern was quite crowded the first day I was there so I opted to go around back and get food to eat in the trellised garden. It was a hot day but comfortable back there. Basic fare: hamburgers, brats, etc. Had lunch inside the...More

This tavern is really neat for tourists that want to experience colonial times. The service was friendly and quick. Food was traditional and tasty (the ribs were unique). It is expensive but worthwhile for the experience.

Amazing lunch! Started with the beam, ham, and kale soup which tasted amazing with perfect seasoning. For entree I had the beef trencher. The beef was perfectly cooked, and the veggies and cheese sauce added greatness to this sandwich. I had potato salad as my...More

We visited for lunch, and really enjoyed the experience. The decor was very authentic, and they have a menu that has traditional fare with some modern additions. My husband had The Brunswick Stew and some pasties, and said it was really good. I had the...More

Food was great. Our service was just okay. Our daughter has a food allergy, so it took a while to get answers about that. Then the food service was slow. It was hot that day, so maybe that slowed things down up and down the...More

Good food and atmosphere. Enjoyed being able to walk right in. They are also open late which is nice.

If you really want to eat in one of the taverns and experience the ambiance, then do go. It was one of our son's favorites. Otherwise a very skippable experience. Mediocre food, no refills on water or drink, stressed out staff, high prices.

We ate at Chowinings for a light supper. We shared the cheese spread platter. It was good with soft little crackers and fruit. My husband had a turkey sandwich on a soft bread, he said was very good. I enjoyed the bean, ham and leek...More

Many restaurant choices in colonial Williamsburg, we picked Chownings because we liked the larger variety on their menu. My wife and I shared a flight of beers, the tastings of all their soups and also shared the crab cake dinner with cole slaw and side...More

Over priced mediocre food that we waited 45 minutes for. There were so many tables open but not enough servers to accommodate all the people waiting outside to get in. There was a bounty of flies, I guess that made it more authentic. Blech. The...More

They do not take reservations for lunch, dinner, or gambols in the evening.
We are coming Nov. 26, 2016 for the SP Event Dinner at 1:15pm. I'm wondering what the meal will entail? We have a 6 person party attending and already pre paid for the meal. Has gratuity already been included in that price we paid?

I suggest you direct your question to the venue where you purchased your special event ticket. I only dine at Chownings at regular dining, not special events. No idea what the menu will be.
do they still serve Welsh rarebit?
