We had seen the signs the evening before and stopped by, but the kitchen is only open over midday, so don’t wait! In addition to a basic grocery with local foods, they operate a kitchen that churns out an amazing number of plate lunches. All...takeout. We picked up some plate lunches and headed to Laupahoehoe Point and enjoyed them there. They also had some lilikoi bars in the case, so we grabbed some of them. It was one of the most pleasant lunches we had this trip: yummy kalua pork, green curry, chili, and loco moco, great scenery and a yummy dessert. The local who pointed us there suggested we call ahead to order to save waiting in line, and we were glad we did.More

Great little spot. We visited twice during our stay in the area. Staff were lovely and welcoming and we had really nice meals on both occasions. A big bonus was that there was live music on both visits.

We went there for lunch because of all the great reviews on TripAdvisor. And they really are correct. We asked the nice young lady at the cash register what we should have and she said oh you got to have the Kahlua pork fries. Which...we did not see on the menu. So they have their homemade fries with Kahlua pork and pineapple salsa and a bit of spicy mayo on top. Absolutely fantastic. One of the greatest things you've ever had to eat. And the people there were very very nice. Highly recommendMore

If you're staying up on this part of the island or just passing through, this is a great stop for some take out. The food is reasonably priced -- the portions are huge!! -- and really good. We had the kalua pork, hamburger steak, and...garlic fries -- all yummy! If you are staying nearby, it's really easy to order online from their website. The store is cute with a good selection and everyone working there was friendly and helpful.More

On our way back from Hilo to the western part of the Big Island, we stopped here for a bite to eat. This seems to be a family and friends run store with a restaurant in the back. We were impressed with the quality of...the food and the friendliness of everyone who worked here. it was not expensive either. The garlic fries were really good and you must get them if you go here. If you're going by Papa'aloa, definitely stop here.More

The Papaaloa Country Store & Cafe is one of those places that still captures the incredible charm and laid back pleasures of Hawaii. Papaaloa is about 30 miles north of Hilo, but it is easy to combine with a visit to Akaka Falls; to the...Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (previously reviewed by me in January 2019); or to Botanical World Adventures. I contend that the Country Store & Cafe is its own destination for anyone with a car coming out of Hilo and wanting to explore the northeast coast of the Big Island. Remember that the Big Island is "Big," nearly as large as the state of Connecticut. I had lunch at the cafe and did not enjoy the live music noted by other reviewers. My light lunch was a mahi mahi sandwich which was prepared perfectly, accompanied with excellent fries and an outstanding fresh brewed iced tea. The other items on the menu looked equally amazing as the fresh fish. I sat at the bar, and the server was very pleasant and enjoyed chatting about food and travel.More

The restaurant was small but it was not crowded at the time the wait staff with spectacular and the food was...absolutely fabulous. The wait staff was very good about helping us with an order to figure out what it was we wanted. And the Purple cheese cake with coconut gel topping was out of this world. As we approached the store to buy a few groceries, we heard really nice live music (Van Morrison songs and others) coming from the cafe. We decided to stop there for a bite to eat. Once inside, the only vacant table was directly in front...of the band on the little stage, and the music was so loud that I couldn't hear my partner or the waitress. The waitress saw the strained look on my face from the music being too loud, and without a word from me, she asked the band to turn the volume down a little. They did, and then it was perfect. Being vegetarian, we ordered the taro sandwich and some pumpkin curry. The sandwich was fine, but the pumpkin curry was DELICIOUS! The band ended with the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." If you like great food, great music and great service in a very sweet atmosphere, then I highly recommend Papaaloa Country Store & Cafe. The guitar might weep, but you won't.More

Well stocked, great selection (not only food but also gift ideas/souvenirs) great bakery, fresh baked items. Popular coffee shop, and the cafe/bar has "live" entertainment most every evening until 8 pm. We're staying here so super convenient for us. Always busy, so obviously a local...favorite. Many stop by just to pick up mail and use the Wi-Fi.More
