I have been to Frances several times with friends and for birthdays and anniversaries as I happen to work across the street from them. Every time something happens: first time we booked 2 tables because we were a big group from the clinic and even though the restaurant was empty they refused to give us 2 adjacent tables and we... Almost impossible to get a reservation online for around 7pm, so just go bravely and hope for a table / bar seating if there's just 1 or 2 of you. 7.45pm is a good time - when first seatings usually leave. Love their house wine, served in a carafe and charged based on what you drink, by the oz. (Note... More

Small neighborhood restaurant somehow off main street. Casual setting and high quality experience. Dimmed lights … excellent ( although relatively traditional ) food … the bread is to die for … good wine selection ( and affordable ) … it was late dinner service but the mood and attention was still pretty high ! One negative comment: can we have... More

Very small restaurant on a quiet residential street. During the busy dinner period, the restaurant was packed and the tables were quite closely spaced, enabling you to hear your neighbors every word. The cooking was solid but no fireworks here. Not a bad option for a neighborhood restaurant that holds one Michelin star. I would encourage dining at an off... More

I expected more from Frances. It has a limited menu and I expected a bit more punch from the small number of items that they serve. Our party of 4 had 3 mains and none of them were bad, but none outstanding either. Additionally, the small plates were really small. Similarly, the waiter wasn't bad, but not that good either.... I've been coming to Frances every single time in in San Francisco for the last 7 years. It never disappoints. It is consistently wonderful: a charming small neighborhood restaurant where the lights are dimmed just right. I've always been lucky to grab a walk-in spot at the counter without reservation. The house wine is delicious, and a great value. Menu... More

dropped in, had no problem finding a bar spot. had an outstanding meal - particularly enjoyed a roasted beet salad. House wine is sold by the ounce - superb quality and value.

The restaurant is off the main streets of SF and tucked in a small little area. The interior reminded me a lot of Dominque Crenn's Pettit Crenn located in Hayes Valley, but a little smaller and more intimate. The service was extremely friend and helped put away our coats, which I loved since in such a small area it's a... More

Staying in The Castro

Neighbourhood Profile
The Castro
A flourishing commercial area that acts as San Francisco's LGBT community center and cultural heart, the Castro is a neighbourhood welcome to everyone. As one of the first predominantly LGBT neighbourhoods in the United States and currently its largest, it remains one of the epicenters of activism in the nation. Grand theatres and glitzy shops now compete with bars and fashionable eateries for attention, drawing visitors from around the world to the bright rainbow flag acting as its beacon.
