Before hearing the best concert we stopped at this restaurant for dinner. We were surprised but not disappointed to find that we, two, were seated at a table for 6 with other diners. We easily converse, so this was no problem- just a surprise. I had the schnitzel which was a bit dry. My husband had the meatloaf which he... More

Suppenkuche is an out of the way, hidden in plain sight German restaurant. The food is excellent, and the staff is friendly. Beer's great!

The restaurant area is tight and jam packed with tables. While there is a communal aspect to the seating, seating a group of eight is difficult due to the layout of the restaurant. The restaurant is a bit on the noisy side which makes dinner conversations difficult. If you're already knowledgeable on German beer, this is the place for you.... More

Good German food especially the potato pancakes. Meat of weinerschichle tough. As a family of 6 the ambiance was not what we expected. Communal seating and super noisy and congested. Mostly very young crowd. Not so great for more elderly like us.

I found the food to be average, not extraordinarily well prepared, and far from (my experience of) authentic. A Schnitzel looked more like a slice of pork roast. The Spätzl tasted an awful lot like pasta. They do "family seating" apparently at random. We got stuck with two strangers at our table, even though there was plenty of room at... More

I have been to Germany many times and was always amazed at the beer, the service and the food in the local places. SuppenKuche is very close to what you would see there. The place is very small, but like Germany, you share a large table with strangers. Part of the atmosphere and fun. The beer was excellent with lots... More

Small restaurant with community seating. But to me, it was all about the food. Simply put, it was the best Sauerbraten and spatzle dinner I have ever had.

We were a foursome and tried unsuccessfully to get in on a Saturday (hint: either arrive early on Friday/Saturday or be prepared to wait 30-45 minutes). Instead, we returned at the same time the following night and were immediately shown to a communal table in a still busy restaurant. The draught German/Austrian/Belgian beer selection was excellent, as were the quantities... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Hayes Valley
Chock full of designer boutiques, art galleries, funky shoe stores, and great restaurants, it’s hard to imagine Hayes Valley once languished in the shadow of a major freeway.
