My spouse and I come here often for pre-show dinners. Last night it was difficult to find something on the menu that was OK diet wise for my spouse. We usually don't have a problem with a restaurant switching out potatoes, polenta, or pilaf for some greens. For some reason our server would not help us out at all with... More

Good location (especially for theater), nice atmosphere. But the food and the service are poor. Grilled Cesar salad was barely grilled (one heart of romaine was ungrilled and undressed), the beet salad had almost no beets (mostly arugula), the fish (cod) was much too salty. Served with very uneven spacing (main came before long-empty appetizer plates had been cleared) and... More

Civic Center is not known for fine dining, but it does offer some hidden gems. I highly recommend Soluna Cafe & Lounge for a bite. The staff are courteous, professional and friendly. The decor is relaxing and spacious. The food is reasonable priced and generously proportioned. I tried the tuna melt which comes with housemate potato chips. The tuna melt... More

We ate lunch here on a Friday afternoon and it was not crowded. The lunch menu had gourmet twists on typical foods (goat cheese on the veggie burger, unique cheeses on their grilled cheese sandwich). The veggie burger was good but the bun was really dry. The grilled cheese was tasty. Fries and butternut/carrot soup were good. Service was really... More

Ate here on our first night in San Fran as it was the closet one to our hotel. We where a bit optimistic as the restaurant seemed very empty. however we decided to go in for a drink and have a look at the menu. It was quiet late so we did decide to eat there, and where presently surprised.... More

Located across the street from the Asian Art Museum, next door to Hastings School of Law, the State Building, the Federal Building, the Orpheum Theater, and City Hall all close by, Soluna is very well positioned. The food was very mixed, however. I went with my family before the theater. My wife and son shared the fried chicken which they... More

This restaurant, convenient to the Civic Center, seems like it should be more, but falls short. The ambience feels like old San Francisco, but it's faded and dinghy. The menu is uninspired, but the food is good. Yet some of the helpings are stingy. The cheese plate, for example, offers two small tastes of cheese, some bread--which we ordered more... More

Had an early dinner before the theater. Certainly handy and overall a fine experience. Good food nicely prepared and presented. Good service. But here's my problem: We ordered 4 drinks: 1 mixed drink (fine), 2 bottled beers (not much to screw up) and 1 wine to go with a nice filet mignon. Nothing special, just a garden variety. At $11... The food we had was great! my husband had a gourmet hamburger and I had steak. It was close to the civic center, Price not to bad for San Francisco.

One friend of mine says she doesn't think the menu here is all that interesting - but it suits me just fine. I've had a variety of items for lunch - and just wish they were open on weekends, because this is a cozy spot to refresh oneself after some hours at the Asian Art Museum across the street.

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
