This place is a great breakfast place. Beware of weekends as the wait is quite long and there is no place to sit and wait! Cute bar but oh so small.

Great comfort food, friendly service, and genuine hospitality. You are a guest in their 'house' and they welcome your company.

Max's is a chain restaurant that serves fatty, expensive appetizers, and bland deli food in glutton-sized portions. The salads could use more greens, especially for the price. The brisket melt sandwich was terribly soggy and drippy, and fell apart immediately. The beef was mushy and lacked flavor. The bread was barely grilled. The Ceaser side salad was miniscule and had... Great food here and great service. We randomly walked by and just decided to try it out and I'm glad we did. Nothing too fancy, just good solid diner/family restaurant kinda food.

Oversized Portions, Amazing Matza Ball Soup, Fabulous Pastrami on Rye (with saurkraut and spicy golden mustard)! My husband enjoyed chicken, potatoes, and salad. Very satsifying and perfect right before (and ON) our flight!

Went there for Sunday breakfast. Very crowded by 10:30; about a 20 minute wait. Had the eggs benedict which was very good. But the plate was full of filler, ie potatoes. Way too much! Service was a tad slow. Overall value poor.

I lived in the Bay Area for a few years in early 2000. Max's in Burlingame was always an easy go-to restaurant when I had picky visitors, diners with diverse tastes, a lunch meeting, or just needed a reliably good meal with good service. While visiting last week with my boyfriend I hoped the Union Square location would live up... More

Went there because of a recommendation. The food looked good but not worth the price. The desserts looked massive but just "so so" tasting. Had the pastrami sandwich which was ok. The kids mac and cheese was easy to go down but made my son throw up within 30 minutes. The pot pie looked impressive, not sure how it tasted.... More

Lots of food. Unfortunately it's bad. Unless you are already on your way to obesity and think MacDonalds is good food then you will be in heaven. If you like taste avoid this place. The servers have to follow strict ridiculous rules which are stated in their menu and this leads to a forced, awkward interaction with the customer. Expensive... More

If there were no other reason to visit Max's, the restaurant's wide variety of sinful sugar-free, low-carb desserts would make this a "must go" for those of us who have type II diabetes and miss things like cofffe-flavored cheesecake and chocolate decadence. But there are lots of other reasons to dine here. It has an open kitchen and you can... More

Staying in Financial District

Neighbourhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
