My wife and I dined at Berta's on April 8th. We had the Chilean empanada appetizer, which had well-prepared pastry and a moist ground beef filling. The raisins in the filling gave a hint of sweetness. Very tasty! My wife ordered the Chilean Pastel de Choclo, which has a meat component very similar to the empanada, but with a baked... More

You want to try different dishes of Latin America and South America? Come to Berta's. The menu includes certain dishes for various countries for patrons ((indicated where on the menu) to choose and also include ingredients so what ones will eat. The place may look small from outside but enough inside with nicely decoration. On a good weather day, patrons... More

In Old Town San Diego where Mexican food is the dominant cuisine, this place stands out with an eclectic menu featuring many dishes from South & Central America. Ihad fried plantains with garlic cilantro sauce for an appetizer followed by a lamb dish from Peru. My wife had a Costa Rican vegan dish. Good flan for dessert. After a week... More

We made reservations for lunch on a Sunday (Thanksgiving weekend). Charming colonial style house in the middle of Old Town San Diego. Finding parking in the area can be problematic when the public parking lots get full. Fortunately, the restaurant has an adjacent parking lot free for the guests. I was surprised the place was almost empty and remained that... More

This is a gem that is easy to miss, nested between a big, loud restaurant/bar and a commercial street in Old Town. But it is well worth finding. It has the most diverse menu of Latin American food I have found in Southern California -- the best dishes from a dozen countries. Also a nice selection of Latin American beers.... More

This was a great meal. If you've ever been to Latin America you'll think you are there. The food is so good. I had the most refreshing fresh lemonade I've ever had. Highly recommend this restaurant.

I agree with some of the other reviewers, in that it's surprising to me that there were not more people at this restaurant. It might be (as in my case), that we got there too early for dinner (around 5pm). The food was EXCELLENT! You feel like you're traveling throughout South America, and trying different dishes, from different countries. Everything... More

For 20 years, we have been coming to San Diego for vacations, conferences, etc., and we usually end up at Berta's, one of our favorite restaurants! It seems like every time we've been, we are one of only 2 or 3 other customers here. For the quality of food and friendliness of staff, why is that? Not complaining, since anywhere... More

I had been looking to re-experience two dishes from our prior travels: Barceloneta -pincho murono (Spanish grilled lamb skewer) and Quepos- plantanos maduros (Costa Rican fried sweet plantains). Berta's exceeded my high expectations. Another couple joined us to also enjoy: empanadas de queso (Chilean cheese turnovers), pastel de choclo (Chilean layers of fresh corn, chicken and beef baked with olives,... More

My husband and I ended up at Berta's because they had the only free parking we could find in Old Town. We reluctantly decided to have dinner there. We shared a bottle of wine from Chile and a Latin American steak dish. The service and food were excellent. Very fresh ingredients and a nice little porch where we were able... More
