Sono-san, the chef here, prepares an excellent traditional kaiseki banquet. The presentations and range of dishes are truly inspired. And the experience is definitively superlative and brimming with subtlety and nuance. The atmosphere and décor of the restaurant are warm and pleasing and you leave with that warm glow of having partaken in something special. If there is anything to... More

I got their $95 tasting menu. Everything was very good and I enjoyed the meal but I can't say there were any courses that I thought were really good. The Japanese have an appreciation for subtlety that is probably lost on most Americans, but they'd probably still enjoy the meal. The service was very attentive and most seats have a... More

I came with a friend for the omakase menu. All the dishes had too much sauce and tasted the same. A disappointment, especially given the price tag. The sashimi was excellent.

This izakaya restaurant serves up elevated, tasty, beautiful dishes. It's one of those cool "down the stairs" places you know you always wanted to try in NYC!

This inconspicuous location in the East Village had me fooled until I finally found an iron clad staircase which led us to the most amazingly designed Japanese oasis. Everything was perfect-the décor, the ambiance, the mood, the playlist, even the restroom was the most perfect and charming restroom ever. Attention to detail was so impressive... But then there was the... More

My only complaint was that it took a while to get the meal going once we ordered. The place is beautifully decored. We sat at the bar and oogled the food as it passed by serving those who ordered ahead and opted for the Kaiseki style courses. My favorite dishes involved seafood mixes that had uni, shrimp, crab, and eggs.... More

I visited Kyo-ya with four friends. We had tried to make a reservation of dinner four times, but I could not before. We were very happy to succeed in making a reservation this time, and fortunately, we got a semi-private room which had just been cancelled just before we arrived at the restaurant. We ordered course menus 'Kaiseki Menu' consisting... More

in a quite and unassuming space situated below the street level; Kyo-ya offers a wonderful evening to lovers of Japanese food. the service is unobtrusive and helpful; the saki list is long and your server can offer suggestions for each course. there is a menu and sushi can be order but come for Kaiseki, a traditional, mutlicourse meal of the... We went for the kaiseki tasting menu which is pricey at $150 per. Can't say I was impressed- it was good but for the price I'd either go a la carte as their menu items looked interesting. Yuzu sake and the peanut miso were terrific and the tomezakana- which was pear snow crab and scallop were excellent but much of... More

A small, unassuming traditional Japanese restaurant based on wonderfully fresh ingredients and a traditional but young master chef's touch. The menu is sophisticated yet clear. A must.

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
