We visited twice. Menu was difficult to read even with candles on the table but somehow we managed. Cocktails were varied and well made.

Death and Co was the favourite bar that my girlfriend and I visited during our week long visit to NYC. We visited on a Sunday evening, with no reservation the host on the door was very welcoming and found us a good table. The bar has a speakeasy, prohibition feel to it and the atmosphere was great. The décor and... More

I heard about this bar in town, I decided to go for a drink after work. The Atmosphere is great, low candle light and nice music so you can actually have a conversation without loosing your voice. The cocktails list is various, can satisfy all different palates and all cocktails are very original. I tried the Secret Weapon, sparkling, refreshing... More

Death & Co is a little hard to find because there isn't much signage around the entrance. We walked by it once or twice looking for it, but you should be able to identify it by its large wooden doors and a plaque that says Death & Co on the ground in front of the bar. Even though it was... More

Since we own the Death & Co book, we were eager to go and try for ourselves. No disappointment here. Husband always orders an aviation as his trial cocktail anywhere we go....of course, Death & Co serves an excellent aviation and so much more. Get the bar nuts to accompany your mad cocktails. Just pace yourself....

My expectations were high for my visit to Death & Co. I was in town for a friends wedding and stayed an extra night in the city specifically to have drinks here. I am a bartender by trade with a copy of the Death & Co book behind my bar so it was not something I could pass up. We... More

Kind of hard to get into. But one of the best cocktails I've ever had my life and I can't even remember the name of it. Great job

Yes it’s hard to get into, yes there are some rules that seem like they are going out of style but yes it’s totally worth it. They are lunatics with their 6 ingredients 2 of them half bar spoons worth if each but the results can’t be argued with. Try the get busy earning.

I admit it, I'm a junkie for speakeasy bars. Death and Co. is in a great location in the East Village, so you can leave your name and number with the door person and go to any one of a dozen or so interesting places in the neighborhood, among them Mother of Pearl, PDT, and Amor y Amargo, all within... Excellent cocktails, wonderfully mysterious and moody atmosphere - depending on what day time you plan to go you may find a bit of a wait, but it is worth it. That's actually part of the beauty of it - the controlled entry doesn't allow it to be just an over crowded bar - but helps create the entire experience. The... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
