About
One of America’s most beloved restaurants, Gramercy Tavern has welcomed guests for close to three decades to enjoy seasonal American cuisine, warm hospitality and unparalleled service. The restaurant is perennially ranked at the top of Zagat Survey’s ‘Most Popular’ list, and has garnered eight James Beard Awards including ‘Outstanding Restaurant’ and ‘Best Chef: NYC’. Chef Michael Anthony’s highly seasonal menu consists of elegant dishes with a rustic influence that showcase the restaurant’s relationships with local farms and purveyors. The Main Dining Room serves seasonal menus starting at $165 for dinner and a $72, three-course lunch prix fixe menu. Reservations are accepted 28 days in advance. The more casual Tavern serves an a la carte menu centered around the wood burning grill, available for reservations, though walk-ins are accepted. The restaurant also features an acclaimed wine list, and thoughtfully selected beer and cocktail offerings.

GramercyTavern was highly recommenced by foodie friends and was wonderful (they do have one Michelin star). There are two rooms with different menus for lunch: front room by the bar for drop-ins (a la carte), and back room with reservations (a la carte or prix fix tasting menus). Decor is surprising for NYC: CA rancho style with high vaulted ceilings, very peaceful and relatively quiet. Tables are widely spaced, and service outstanding, making an unusually pleasant dining experience. Good range of entrees and appetizers, all very tasty and beautifully plated. You can make special requests for dish alterations. Good, but pricey wine list. Lovely, crisp salads and very good fresh-baked rolls. We had 4 popular entrees, and rated them: superb burger, excellent schnitzel, very good char and tile fish. Dessert menu looks fabulous, but we had no room. Expensive, but very well worth it for special occasions. Tips and coatcheck included in prices. Lunch about $50 each without alcohol. Highly recommended.

There are many reasons that Gramercy Tavern has been listed as one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States for 25 consecutive years. In short, it's because of the incredible and consistent focus on service and the guest experience. They know your dietary restrictions when you arrive. The waitstaff is incredibly attentive and focused and understand every dish, the ingredients and how they are prepared. It's because of the food is innovative, locally sourced, fresh and no expense is spared with respect to the ingredients (Thank you Executive Chef Michael Anthony). There are a broad swath of wine choices and the cocktails are fantastic, and the decor is beautiful. If you dine in New York City, you have a seemingly infinite number of dining choices. To remain at the top of the heap for so many years is a tribute to the persistence and insistence of always improving the guest experience. Thank you Danny Meyer!

This was one of the best meals I have ever had! My husband and I had dinner at the Gramercy Tavern on a Friday evening in January. You must make reservations to eat in the restaurant section which in the back, the front is the bar and there are tables available on a first come first serve basis (when we arrived at our reserved time there was a 2 hour wait for the bar seating). There is a 3 course dinner menu and a tasting menu available, we selected from the 3 course dinner. We both started with the octopus which was very good. There were also salad and soups selections as well. For our main my husband had tile fish and I had skate. It was amazing, I had never had skate before and it really yummy. And, the best part was dessert. I had the chocolate custard dessert, sooo good. I’m not a wine drinker but, many diners were enjoying a variety of wines so I think they must have a great selection. We are both beer drinkers and they had a decent selection. The service was outstanding, our server was Amanda, she was very attentive, always on top of everything and provided great descriptions of the food. There were so many other wait staff that anything you wanted of needed was provided before you even knew you needed it. Again, probably one of the best meals I’ve had and will definitely return on future trips to NYC.

First (and likely only) time dining at the Gramercy Tavern. The meal itself was fine (aside from a very salty chicken) but left very disappointed with our careless server. He never introduced himself, seemed not interested at all in engaging with the table, was mostly MIA (20 min between main dish and dessert felt like forever) and never acknowledged the birthday we were celebrating. The support staff did bring a cake with a generic “happy birthday” written on the plate despite the fact that I was specifically asked for the name of the birthday person when confirming the reservation the day before. When you’re spending $350 for a meal for two you do get to expect some personal touch to the occasion but there was none whatsoever. Not sure if it’s the no-tipping policy that ends up resulting in this very mediocre service. Not interested in coming back.

At a place like this, I expect to be wowed by the food. That happened with the chocolate custard dessert, but with nothing else. They started with a charred onion soup, which was nothing special. The bread was quite good, and we'd have liked to have had another piece, but that was never offered. (It was offered, however, to the table behind us.) The cavatelli bolognese appetizer was decent, but I've had better pasta dishes elsewhere for a lot less money. The chicken wasn't great. I had an Italian red wine with the pasta and would have ordered something else to go with the chicken, if the server had ever come by. Staff was friendly in all interactions and they were quite efficient in refilling water, but our server was unseen from the time he took the order until the time he came to suggest a cheese plate before dessert. I'd recommend Del Posto for a bit more money or Daniel for a lot more money for a bette experience.

We came here on the recommendation of a colleague and were not disappointed. Although we had to wait aproximately 30 minutes for a table at lunch time (we didnt have a reservation), it was no problem as they have a comfortable waiting area and staff kept us updated on progress of our table. Once seated we had a great dining experience, with bubbly tavern atmosphere, very friendly and helpful service and exceptional food and wine. I made a special request for the Wagyu meatballs due to my dairy allergy and the waitress (I cant remember her name, but she was awesome) organised this with the kitchen and the result was amazing....it ended up being one of my favourite meals while in NY. Highly recommended.

I’ll start by saying that this is a place to go for a special occasion. If money is an issue, this is not for you. But if you enjoy being pampered while you eat, then this is heaven. We ordered the three course meal and we were given little shooters of soup before our appetizers arrived. We chose a very bright Tempranillo to accompany the food. Everything was delicious! The server asked us if we wanted some time before the desserts came so we could slowly sip. I even got an amazing little coconut cake for my birthday. I don’t think we left a single bite of anything. To close, our server brought us truffles. Start to finish, the entire experience was divine.

This review is strictly for the Tavern portion of Gramercy Tavern. Restaurant Week is a fun event that I eagerly look forward to every year. Our experience at Tavern at Gramercy was mixed. We asked to be seated at one of the empty tables adjacent to the building after we rejected a table in the street close to a noisy Verizon truck. They left us standing in front of the empty row of tables for about fifteen minutes while the waiter cleared the issue with the manager. We felt like unwanted patrons. After setting the table and taking our orders, we waited quite a while for the butter to smear on the tender rolls. For a restaurant of this caliber with a Michelin star it seemed rather odd that there wasn’t enough whipped butter on hand. Helga’s appetizer of Brioche Shrimp Toast was like a sponge soaked in oil with little shrimp taste. Her main course of Grilled Hanger Steak with mushrooms, leeks and carrot salsa was minuscule and not only looked but tasted dry. Helga chose a Pale Ale to drink with her meal and this also took a while to be served. I began with the Grilled Corn Flatbread flecked with shisito peppers, Parmesan and pickled Fresno. Both crisp and chewy, the tangy flavors made me sing with joy. Duck Strozzapreti followed. Shredded duck with golden cherry tomatoes and the pasta married flavorfully. I am fond of ice cream so chose the Peach Melba Sundae which had raspberry sauce, peaches and almond cookies. Too many of the cookies in the sundae marred what could have been a stellar chilled dessert. I would have preferred more fruit and ice cream. Before we left the manager apologized for the table snafu but what we paid left Helga with a slightly bitter taste and she won’t be returning. For me, the duck beckons.

Having a very high expectation and having heard amazing feedback, we were thoroughly disappointed. There was a five course set 'tasting menu' that only had one extra course as a 'surprise' The main focus of the team seemed to be to get you in and out as soon as possible. We had completed 3 courses within 45mins of arriving. we tried slowing down by eating slowly and pausing but this just made the staff try and clear our semi-finished plates, we had to keep telling them we weren't finished. Considering the eye-watering prices, this is unacceptable. I cant recommend this venue for fine dining, maybe the 'Pub' experience is better and maybe they should concentrate on that and forget fine dining.

There is an understated elegance to everything here, from the welcome to the goodbye. The food is immaculate, hitting all the right notes at the right pitches. It is never pretentious food (I always get the Tavern Burger), but you end up wondering if they spent hours contemplating at which angle the fries should be placed at with the respect to the burger. The wine list is simply amazing and I appreciate the fact that you can find many bottles under $100 that will hold themselves up against the great food. The check (with tip included) always surprises me here, because it always feels like the best bargain in the city considering what you get. Forget the reservations, go to the tavern side amd enjoy a drink at the bar while you wait for a table. The whole thing is ceremony.

Went here years ago for lunch and it was a wonderful New York experience. This time it was the worst of the half dozen restaurants we visited on this trip and on my birthday no less. The good: the host staff, the ambiance. That’s it. Our server was terrible. He didn’t show up to the table for 15 minutes and then creepily popped up behind me, no hello, no introduction and said… are you ready to order. Mind you we already had drinks the sweet hostess ordered for us and another nice gentleman brought us but it’s super weird to not great your table. From there we were rushed. The liver moose was good. Salad was ridiculously over- priced. My husbands burger was dry and tasteless and my stew tasted like an old Irish granny made it with the butchers leftover meat. It was my birthday and they still let me order dessert and then brought another one on top of that. I wish they would have just brought the birthday dessert or comped the one I ordered as I didn’t want two desserts. Service in New York is not great in general but this was bad even by New York standards (Balthazar is bad too but at least their food is good). Food so disappointing. It was like diner food. Another institution riding on it’s laurels rather than striving to provide quality food.

Sucks that we are in 2023 and still have to deal with racism. Out of all the Michelin star restaurants I could choose from I chose Gramercy to celebrate my husband's 40th even though it was not as fancy as the others. Well my mistake bc service was terrible - but we noticed more for us than for the white patrons eating next to us? While they were catered to more and wine was poured, we sat with empty glasses. Normally if we aren't feeling an odd vibe I'll pour my own wine, but seeing the two tables next to us and seeing that their glasses were being filled constantly, wanted to just see how long our glasses would go empty. They sat empty for awhile I'll just say, then at the end to pay our $800 bill the server finally came to see if we "enjoyed" our dinner. We should have complained then but it was his bday that night so we paid, still tipped well, then went home unhappy. Thanks for ruining my husband's 40th.

This restaurant has excellent food. I have eaten a lot of really great food in my life but this is superior to it all. The staff at this restaurant is so kind and friendly, I told them that I was really excited to be here and they gave me extra dessert and then breakfast. If you are willing to spend some cash, eat at the dinning room that has a full tasting menu. I haven’t tried it but the tavern is well liked and cheaper, it offers a à la carte menu.

Great atmosphere and typically great friendly American service. The food is good, but a bit on the heavy side. The flatbread was incredibly tasty, but quite greasy. The burger was very tasty, but could use more stuff inside besides the meat to make it lighter (lettuce, tomato, something) and good homemade french fries would make a much better impression that the dry potato chips that they serve. The wagyu meet balls were very tasty, but also needed something on the side to make it lighter. The chicked was big, but average. The portions are quite large, so it’s really easy to order too much, we left a lot of food.

Despite a frazzled entrance (our fault) - the lunch was exquisite. We enjoyed a Pinot Grigio - which has a Rose tint, the Chestnut Cavatelli Bolognese was almost impossible to describe, the flavors were pure perfection. Not to be outdone the GT Burger melted upon each bite. As always, the service was charming. Still one of the best spots in the neighborhood.

Flatiron District
Offering many of city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets- much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighbourhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being the home of a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
