I have visited Katz's since they launched "send a salami to your boy in the army. " It is always busy and most always a line outside. The sandwiches are outsized. Quality wise, Carnegie Deli, now closed was more flavorful and a notch above. Pastrami Queen on the upper east side, kosher and not just Kosher style, is to my... More

It is a big place, crowded, in the beginning it is hard to understand what to do, but there are few people from the deli that keeping the order. The pastrami sandwich is big, tasty and recommended.

I did not believe the hype from my wife on this place. Absolutely the best pastrami I have ever had. If you are in New York, you have to stop in. It is worth the effort, The pastrami was so tender and just melted in your mouth. Going back again tomorrow before the Yankees game.

If you want to experience the real New York City, head to Katz's. This place manages to combine amazing food, lightening quick service, and friendly people in what appears to be chaos among a wide assortment of the faces of New York. Best pastrami ever!!!! Hot and perfectly seasoned, they cut thick slices for your sandwich and give you tastes whil... More

Katz was on our 'to-do' list. Despite it being a high-volume, quick turnover diner and clearly popular with tourists, the food was still excellent and the service seemed authentic. Go for the counter-service option where you queue for the food and take it to your table, that way you get to see them making the sandwich and get an extra... More

Wanted to get to Katz since seeing it on Man vs Food just to sample the pastrami sandwich and so glad I did. Was a bit confused when first arrived as they just give you a ticket and leave you to fend for yourself. Turns out it's a pretty straightforward set up, get your ticket, join one of several queues... Now that Carnegie Deli is closed, this is one of the few authentic places left to get great corned beef, pastrami, brisket, knishes, blintzes, matzo ball soup, and other great kosher-style foods. Of course it's the location of the famous "I'll have what she's having" scene from "When Harry Met Sally", and you pay by accumulating tickets that you turn... More

I remember this fabled Lower East Side eatery from childhood, when a beloved uncle took us there and the roast turkey drum sticks dangling over my head appeared positively primeval, as if borrowed from The Flintstones. It's self-service with a rather rudimentary civility, but hey, the sandwiches, comprising a mountain of meat heaped between two slices of rye bread, are... More

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.
