We were so disappointed upon returning to one of our favorite theater district restaurants to find that it has declined since our last visit. Of course, the decor, pianist and general atmosphere are still delightful BUT. The tables are now packed in so closely, that...More

Had been here several times over the years for after theatre supper, and had really enjoyed. And while it could have been an off night, I really think this is probably as good as it gets anymore. No piano player when we had been assured...More

We eat often at Chez Josephine because we love the atmosphere - murals and music. Some of the food disappointed on our last two visits/ the fried chicken was way overcooked, dry and hard. A real disappointment. Other items were up to par. So, don’t...More

My friend and I went here for our last dinner in NYC. We didn't have a reservation, yet they were very accommodating. They had pianist performing which was very nice. The staff was great and so was the food, so delicious.

Enjoyed a wonderful brunch before Sunday afternoon theater. Outstanding, attentive service and a great value for the prix fixe meal. Piano music made the experience and ambiance extra special. Plan to return soon for dinner.

We attended the Travel Show at the Javitz, and walked 15 minutes to this lovely restaurant. 51 years old, owned by Miss Baker's son (really!). Simple, tightly focused menu and excellent, reasonable wine list. Excellent service. We had the fried chicken, the french onion soup,...More

Came here for an early dinner after seeing the restaurant on the local news channel. Everything was good - food, service, atmosphere - but not necessarily memorable. Close enough to theaters that you could come here immediately before or later. Will try again this winter

We have frequented Chez Josephine for almost 20 years prior to going to Broadway performances. It is a true French bistro...the decor, the ambiance, the food. Begun by 2 of Josephine Baker's adopted children (thus the name), you enter the restaurant and enter the world...More

I would definitely consider this an upscale place, great for a birthday dinner. And certainly, wait for the theater crowds to leave.

The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.
