We had a pre-theater dinner at Chez Josephine last night. The food was very good. The only miss was the onion tart. The salads, carrot/ginger soup, the tiger prawns, the Dover sole and the Amish chicken were all top drawer. The baked apple and flourless, chocolate cake for dessert were sinful. Nice piano player. The room is crowded, but manageable and... More

We went to Chez Josephine after a Saturday matinee. We told our waiter we weren't in a rush and enjoyed a leisurely dinner. We were a little apprehensive when we arrived being led to the upstairs dining room however, there were fewer tables upstairs than in the main dining room and the tables weren't stacked together as in the main... Following a great show on Broadway we wanted a memorable dinner afterwards. Chez Josephine came highly recommended to us as one of the last truly unique New York dining experiences. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful with its bold red and green accents highlighted by candles. A warm and magical feeling. The pasta with mushrooms, truffle oil and sundried... More

We have been going to this restaurant for years. Right in the theatre district, it is quaint and lovely named for the amazing Josephine Baker. There is lovely piano music and a french atmosphere. Service is great. Food was not as good as on previous visits, but their french onion soup is perfection. Just the way it should be served.

ok, the food was not really that amazing. We especially had a problem with the fish that was dry and tasteless... But the response when we let them know was mind blowing!! FIrst they got us 3 glasses of champaing. The waiter apologized deeply (although it was not his fault and we were not really upset) then the Maitre came,... More

We had a wonderful dinner in this lovely restaurant...we so enjoyed the French decor and the soothing piano playing throughout the evening. There was a Prefix on Sunday evening but we ordered from the regular menu. The service was excellent!

I had a chance to have a table during my recent trip to New York. The evening was all about magic in the plate and magic in this iconic place. The live jazz music makes the evening delightful. One Dinner is not enough to discover all the menu. You will be amazes by the kindness of the team and the... More

We just happened on this by our hotel. Really good piano music while we were there. The service was super friendly and super slow. I would avoid the cassoulet - unless you know you like seafood sausage. We learned we do not like it. The lobster bisque was good.

Description
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
