This was the first of two Michelin starred restaurants we tried on a quick 5 night trip for the waste of time and money (IMHO) that is the Ball Drop in Times Square. Our previous experience of Michelin starred restaurants (some reviewed and some not) is not exactly favourable. At least the food on this trip lived up to expectations finally.
Daniel is housed in an impressive room. Almost what I would describe as classic late 19th century Manhattan dining room as seen in various movies. Gentlemen have to wear jackets in the main room. Why? God knows! It doesn't enhance my dining experience or anyone else's I would have thought. The cloakroom has a load of spares if you forget or haven't got one.
The wine list is huge and therefore as I was slogging through it looking for something I liked that was reasonably priced I was glad of the decision by wife and daughter that we were having the tasting menu with cheap wine flight. I would have found something eventually but I was glad to have the responsibility removed from me. It wouldn't be a Michelin if it didn't have daft prices, but equally there were good value bottles for us non millionaire food tourists. As it was, it worked out brilliantly as whoever selected the wines as pairings did an excellent job, as did whoever made the (to me) eccentric house cocktails. They were well worth it.
The breads are good. Nice selection and warm and with what was described as French salted and cultured butter. Whether it was cultured because it spoke several languages or had a knowledge of ballet and opera we never discovered, but it was very nice and moreish. Daughter didn't like butter, does now.
The tasting menu started well. We'll exclude comments about the sweetbreads because quite frankly wife and daughter wouldn't have touched them even if they came free with a lottery win. I expected more seasoning and a crisper presentation of mine. First four dishes and we thought we were in for perfection. Only the tofu seemed strange with the tuna. However, the beef just didn't quite do it for us and perhaps for some unknown reason I expected a more spectacular rendition of an old favourite with the pears for dessert. The apple thing I got at Le Bernadin was a more spectacular and worthy finish. Great selection of cheese to finish and a rum cake to take away. Service was excellent and it was also nice to see Le Patron having a wander round for a chat. Worth a visit. Very good food albeit pricey.

but you,'ll need way more than pennies to dine here. we had a 7:30 reservation and were seated promptly in one of the most beauriful dining rooms that you will experience. Service was prompt and drinks were excellent. A reminder that jackets are required for gentlemen, a rule that i believe adds to the dining experience not detracts from it, forcing our new generation of diners to look like they aren't attending a football game. We selected the 4 course pre fixe menu priced at $179 per, which i considered a bargain for a Michelin 2 star in New York. The food not only was beautiful to the eye but also to the palate, arriving timely to coincide with hunger but not to appear to be rushing us.The entire evening was delightful as well as memorable and we would highly recommend dining at Daniel whenever you have the chance. Yes, it's expensive but life is too short for cheap wine and cheap food.

We like arriving a bit early to have a drink at the bar. The main room is gorgeous. The food and wine are so excellent me and my wife relive the experience from time to time (mentally, of course). All the people who have serviced us are so dedicated to what they do, and knowledgeable, that we have truly felt this is 100% worth its price.

Have always wanted to try Daniel after friends raved about it. Personally, I found the entire experience distinctly average.
Never starts well when you are seated in the worst table in the restaurant. I’m not one to jump up and down about this when seated, sometimes you get a great seat, other times you get a dud, you get on with it in the expectation that the slight you get by getting a crap seat is trumped by a great meal and defining experience. Unfortunately both the table and the experience were equally poor. The table looked as though it was dropped in the back corner of the restaurant (right near where they dump the empty plates and bring food from the kitchen) as a cheap extra revenue space. 2 star establishments should be expected to make people feel special, not making you feel like you are lucky to just be there. Totally unacceptable.
The only thing worse than the table was the oxidised white wine I ordered(my bad). Credit to the Somm after tasting it he agreed too that it was a dud and agreed that it was not fit for consumption. However his service and knowledge was the standout of the night.
Otherwise service was functional if anything, no real enthusiasm or passion, all very much going through the motions, nothing like the warm personal attention you receive in many other up to speed Michelin establishments.
Food, we ordered the 4 course prix fixe, my wife was 2/4 for her meals, the squab consommé and blood orange sanguine up to expectation. The turbot she ordered was over cooked (how does this get sent out at a 2 star est?) and her duck had a fat line of sinew running through it, basically 1/3 of it was inedible unless you had a power saw to cut through it. Again, how does this even get sent out?
My dishes, 1/4, the Pomme dessert was sensational, truly worthy of a Michelin star kitchen. The mackerel course was a bit blah, the sole likewise doused in a sickly sweet creamy sauce, caviar overpowered by dill. The strip loin was under seasoned and no idea why that stodgy cheesy “pierogi” was doing anywhere near the plate.
We were spectacularly underwhelmed with the whole experience. The dining room is stuck in the past, the food was layered with critical errors, over cooked turbot, poorly prepared duck, bland under-seasoned beef, unforgivable at a Michelin rated restaurant. The salted butter with the house baked breads was good however.
Luckily the desserts provided a lifeboat to the whole sinking ship experience. Safe to say it is unlikely we will be back. Such a shame for a supposed “institution”. If this is the standard going forward for Daniel, a fall to 1 star is likely on the cards.

I dined at Daniel in a highly anticipated visit with one friend in late July 2021. I would like to start off with the positives of my experience. As soon as you step foot in the restaurant, you are met with impeccable service and a welcoming staff. Firstly, I had booked the lounge section of the restaurant by mistake and wanted to move to the main dining room. (The menus available in the lounge/outdoor seating differ.) Upon requesting this move from the staff, they were extremely accommodating and were able to find us a table following a short wait despite our incorrect reservation. Once seated in the main dining room, you are greeted with an opulent atmosphere. Small touches such as a fresh napkin every time you get up from you’re table further the quality of the service. In addition, we were able to take a look at the kitchen upon request from our waiter which was highly appreciated.
However, overshadowing the positives above is the disappointing food. The two of us opted to have the 7 course tasting menu. Coming at a steep price of $255, I was expecting greater. The food overall was mediocre and left much to be desired. The worst dish would be the “Maine Peekytoe Crab”. Apart from the lacking seasoning, the dish was topped with seaweed which did not compliment the crab whatsoever and had an unpleasant flavour. Most dishes lacked overall seasoning and flavour, especially the langoustine which was rather bland and boring. The Bluefin Tuna was a similar story and was accompanied with common and simple ingredients. I could recommend the veal and escargot as they were quite good but did not nearly offset the quality of the other dishes. The first course of foie gras was a rather small portion and lacked originality as it was served with a pastry, berries and simple salad. As for the desert, they were very small and basic. Although, we had received a complimentary tart as we were celebrating, which tasted excellent and a very nice gesture. In general, I was not impressed by the lack of complex flavours and textures which I expected.
After a few add ons such as a couple espressos and virgin cocktails, the bill comes out to ~ $330 per person not including tips. Considering the fact that dinner for two can easily reach $600+ without alcohol, It is characteristic of NYC, but is certainly not worth the experience. I have certainly had significantly better experiences at restaurants of similar caliber and left disappointed in the mediocre dishes.

Went to the Daniel for Thanksgiving 2020 dinner after planning it for several years. All three of us were disappointed with both the quality of courses and wine pairings and the service. Courses were reasonably presented but the flavors, tastes, and textures were not of a Michelin 2 star level. Especially disappointing were the desserts. Wine pours were minuscule and not impressive: we should've ordered a bottle instead of overpriced pairings. Service was very rushed: staff went quickly over learned course descriptions and quickly veered away. We have something to compare Daniel with under the identical COVID conditions: went to Le Bernadine the next evening and were blown away. People told us Daniel went 1-2 levels down in the last several years...

This restaurant is simply superb! The service is impeccable, no detail goes unnoticed, and the food is creative and inspired. We had the 3 course prix fixe for my birthday, and we got an additional chocolate cake for dessert! The tables are well spaced, the dining room is carpeted and quiet, and the room elegant. We enjoyed the white asparagus and the peekytoe crab appetizers followed by chicken stuffed with crab mousseline and accompanied by fresh morels and sautéed spinach. Desserts were equally elaborate and tasty. My spouse had the wine pairings for each course and I enjoyed a lovely Chablis and a Tokaji with my strawberry dessert. A wonderful place!!

My partner and I had been really looking forward to our dinner at Daniel's but, regrettably, we must say that we thought that it was nothing more than a nice meal, and there is little special about it. We had bread and butter to start (delicious), our main dishes were the duck (fairly dull) and the burger (a rather mediocre and overloaded burger). Desserts were pleasant. The outdoor dining space is nice and neat, though it is an open sidewalk so passers-by are frequently walking by the tables. I believe the main problem was that we visited more than 12 Michelin-starred restaurants this summer and Daniel simply did not compare with any of them, both in terms of food quality and service (the latter, rather informal if friendly).

Upon entering you are immediately greeted with friendly service and are made to feel as if you are apart of a special experience. You can tell that everyone takes pride in their exceptional service. The wagyu beef was to die for, and the restaurant itself is a beautiful sight. Some may feel the portions are small but one can not deny how delicious the food is. Wonderful experience.

We were in new york, so booked to eat here before went. The place was beautiful the staff super attentive. The food was so nice. The only thing i would say was, we were very disappointed when we got there, that it was only a taster menu being served, it was $188.00 per person, there was no other choices (apart from another one with wine matching even more expensive). Whilst the food was nice i struggled with spending this much one one meal. We had one bottle of wine. The bill came to $657.00 with the tip. We would never spend that much money on one meal ever. I didn't see anywhere on the website it was a taster menu only. We would eat there again but not if it was a taster menu

So picture this. It's the height of the pandemic disruption, its the rainiest night in New York in a while and we have a party of 6 split into 2 tables of 4 adults and 2 teens due to COVID regulations. Plus picky eaters all. So many ways this could have been less than perfect but the folks at Daniel pullet it off seamlessly.
When we arrived it was pouring and the sidewalk seating was overwhelmed. No matter. Within 5 minutes we were seated at tables close to each other to boot.
The full bar was not open. No matter. We had an excellent bottle of wine and they made me a delicious caipirinha just the way I like it.
The menus arrived and we ordered unhurriedly. Among other things were oysters, tuna, salads as appetisers and fish, beef and burgers as mains. Everything was prepared and served masterfully. Not a crumb was left over.
I am just amazed at how unerringly and with grace and aplomb they pulled everything off. The experience was fitting for a top restaurant, in the best conditions rather than sidewalk seating, in wet weather in the midst of a global emergency.
It's pricey but skip a couple of mediocre evenings elsewhere and go here instead; you'll be glad.
Thank you all. We will be back frequently.

We reserved a thanksgiving dinner for 7:45 pm. We were not seated till 8pm due to their internal delays. They have apparently overbooked and they did not even offer to gives us drinks when we are waiting. It is has been such a huge downgrade since the last time we were here 4 years ago. We came back for the same experience but for a 500 USD per person dinner I would expect a much better timing.
We asked for vegetarian menus and we were given non vegetarian menus. So a lack of tracking customers due to volume.
The place is slacking from the top.
It is a waste of couple thousand bucks for the night.
Never coming back.

Why the one star: We were served bad Uni in both of our Spanish Mackerel dishes that are part of their 7-course tasting menu. The taste was extraordinarily pungent and left my nostrils stinging with this foul flavor for the next several dishes. We sent both dishes back to the kitchen with the news of this displeasure which was then ignored for the rest of the evening. No acknowledgement, no replacement, no extra little something to make up for one of their key ingredients having gone bad. Uni is one of our favorite delicacies and usually the star for us in an omakase environment. Having bad uni is one of the worst experiences you can have and then to have it at $400 a head AND have it ignored by the staff makes it even worse. One Star.
Why not a one star: The location, the ambiance, the art, the service (outside of the above) all knocked it out of the park. The food otherwise was kind of what I expected: World class artistic plating, nothing too adventurous on the tongue. Better food experience and value at any other 2-star restaurant in the city.

We had a wonderful anniversary dinner in the lounge. This place is on many “Best of”-type restaurant lists, and our expectations were met in every way. The food was delicious and artfully presented, and the service was highly professional — understatedly friendly and attentive. A great venue for a special occasion or a fine-dining fix.

I had been to Daniel once in the last century; a couple of decades later, it's still there and so are its Michelin stars. If there was one place to have the dining experience unlike anything else - and feel safe and cozy in the pandemic era, it's Daniel. The outdoor dining is situated in small curtained cabanas on the street; in fact, a table like that, pandemic or not, was a treat in and of itself. Still, it's all about the food, and Daniel serves the best in taste, presentation, pairing and overall gastronomic art. The staff is attentive, friendly, knowledgable and pampers you enough but knows when not to approach a table too often. In other words, this is the Rolls Royce of restaurants and the Daniel staff are the top of their classes. It's worth every penny.
