My wife and I were in the area for the week and I read reviews about this place, which was near where we were staying - so we had to try it out. First of all, we walked in and the entire staff, to include...the chef who was making sushi, said "Hi" and welcomed us in. There were two or three gentlemen sitting at the bar eating and drinking, having conversation in Japanese with the chef - that was a great sign to me! We ordered the Chef's Sushi Platter, Chef's Sashimi, and drinks. It was all fantastic! The chef checked on us several times and clearly wanted to make sure we were happy. Yes, it is a bit pricey and probably not a place I could go on a regular basis - but holy smokes it was great! There's the rub...good sushi just isn't cheap. There are plenty of OK sushi places for OK prices - and that is where most people end up going. This place is worth the trip and the extra cost - we payed just at $100 for the two large platters and drinks. We will definitely go back next time we are in NYC.More

This is a very intimate, authentic, sushi restaurant. The food and service were top-notch. We had several appetizers, drinks, and seemingly endless sushi. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food.

My sister and I tried this place as it had a slightly cheaper omakase than other places nearby. The food was delicious, the wait staff super kind — and we loved chatting with the head sushi chef behind the counter. A lovely evening, would highly...recommend!More

It was very close to Hotel Pod 51, small but very Special and individual restaurant. The food was excellent, prepared in front of you. Service was very friendly and proffesional. It's more expensive then other sushi places around, but sure worth the experience.

I went to this place recently on a lunch date. It's a pretty cozy place in basement. It closes for lunch around 2.00 pm so they start rushing you at 1.25. We had ordered Sashimi Platter, Crunchy Salmon Roll and Destiny Lover Roll. They all...were pretty good. One thing I like to point is that the fish didn't taste very fresh. I am not saying it was bad, just wasn't very fresh. I will give them a try for sure in future.More

We came here for lunch one day and found that you needed a reservation for lunch. We subsequently made a reservation for a few days later and had lunch. We choose the chefs special omakase bowl and it was a delicious. Just the right amount...for lunch with great flavors and fresh fish. This is a tiny restaurant and reservations are must.More

Wanted to bring my daughter out for some omokase and our favorites were booked; my wife found this listing in several guides, and it was close. Reviews looked good, so we decided to try. We will be back. Small restaurant, small sushi bar that seems...reserved largely for omokase; they sat people later in the evening at the bar as well. Several large groups of Japanese businessmen drinking sake and loudly cheering the chef; seemed to bode well. We went for a mixture of sushi and sashimi (word of warning - make sure you've got an idea of the price of the evening; somehow the $80 omokase is for a pretty minimum round) and were treated to a remarkably inventive and delicious selection. It seemed that the chef warmed to us after a while, and when we hit the sushi bites, it went fast and furious; but ALL were great. A bit of scolding for using soy when directed not to, and we learned not to violate the rules. Sake selection is good. Fun atmosphere; they have TVs behind the bar that were playing Japanese TV dance shows that seemed to be from the mid 70's to 80's. Great energy and certainly off the radar. It was not cheap; however, good omokase seldom is. It might limit our returns, but we will come back.More

Great traditional Japanese style sushi. No frills. Tiny shotgun style restaurant. Full of Japanese patrons - always a good sign. Nigiri was good sized.

Great atmosphere, lovely staff, delicious sushi but would have preferred no wasabi inside the sushi since the kids find it a bit hot.

2 of us have a booking at the sushi bar on a Friday Night. We ordered omakase sushi. The server asks us how much we want to spend and we just tell them to keep the sushi flowing until we are full. The sushi requires...minimal soy sauce/wasabi as it is already seasoned which is what I like. The fish is nice, the nigiri is good and I like their seasoning. However their fish is more the common kind which for me a 5 star place needs some exotic seafood that is difficult to find so it is 4 star for me.More

This small basement space on 51st street is a treasure. Come early and visit the small park across the street, complete with waterfall. We had the sushi/sashimi omakase and were thrilled with the variety and quality of food. Service, pacing, plating - all terrific. Please do...not believe this review as I fear this place is so good that a reservation may become impossible.More

We sat at the sushi bar and it was a treat. The more we ordered, the more the sushi chef gave us exotic taste portions of fish and creative rolls. The sea urchin was the best I can recall in the US, and was reminiscent...of Tokyo standards. The place was crowded, with many Japanese patrons. Unusual location and access feels as though one might be entering a dungeon, but forget all else. The food was excellent.More
