As native Chicagoans, my wife and I had to travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to discover Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream. Chuck Sr. and Nancy Deadman opened their own ice cream and candy shop in Madison in 1962. Since then, the family-owned business has expanded to more...than 400 small, independent restaurants and scoop shops nationwide, even in Chicago. But Madison is where the Deadmans made their bones, crafting their own rich ice cream to include more than 100 super premium flavors. We stopped at the 468 State Street address. In Madison, there also are locations at 2322 Atwood Avenue, 444 South Midvale Boulevard, 6079 Gemini Drive, 2531 Monroe Street and 1726 Fordem Avenue in Camelot Square. All are open from 2 to 9 daily. The trick is to choose the tastiest ice cream flavor. There are the traditional flavors like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butter pecan, coconut, raspberry, blueberry, peach, rocky road, cookie dough, salted caramel, key lime, black cherry and Mackinac Island fudge. And there are unconventional flavors such as banana cream pie, bourbon pecan pie, burnt butterscotch, egg nog, coconut almond bliss, lemon meringue, toffee chocolate chip, peanut butter cookie dough, Door County cherry, cinnamon stick, chocolate raspberry truffle, pumpkin, ultimate Oreo, root beer float and caramel apple pie. Smooth. Creamy. Unique. Take your pick. Bet you can't choose only one.More
