I can't believe this place is getting positive reviews. The moment I sat down in the dark (lights were out) back of the restaurant, I knew I was taking a risk at getting sick. The salsa was the first very scary thing. I wondered if it was supposed to smell like it had already gone bad. It was like nothing... More

I've been here several times because we have friends who love it. Coming from southern California, I know good Mexican food. This is pretty good, but not great by California standards. But, in Hawaii it qualifies as great (LOL). I usually get the order the enchiladas which are very good. The guacamole is good, too. I would rate this place... More

Hidden away in a strip mall in an industrial area. It is a family run place. Food slow to come but worth the wait. People should know ahead that Tacos come with a big blob of Guacamole. Great if you like it but an unpleasant surprise for our teen. I had the red enchilada & chile relleno with rice &... More

Chili Colorado and chili verde are both wonderful. Excellent flavor. Cold Mexican beers. Yum can hardly wait to return

Good chips, good sauces. Wasn't expecting to have Mexican on my Hawaiian vacation, but it was great! Got the combo plate and let the server make the choices! It was all fantastic.

The best chile rellenos! Not all battered! Great guacamole and the shrimp fajitas were great. The chile verde is outstanding and the price is very reasonable. Not a tourist trap!

The El Maguey opens for dinner at 5:00pm. Be there when they open or be prepared for a wait. EXCELLENT MEXICAN FOOD! The BEST. Rueben's in Hilo, cannot begin to compare with El Maguey nor can Poncho & Lefty's or Los Habaneros in Kona.

Went for lunch, chips and salsa (very thin and not very distinctive) were ok. The Chimi's were top shelf. Lots of meat, well seasoned. The rice and beans were fine. Good prices. Good portions. Worth a go if you want solid tasting Mexican at a nice price.

This restaurant had been at its current location for about 5 years. Food continues to be good and they have kept costs low. Standard tex-mex menu with the usual suspects - burritos, enchiladas, tacos, tostadas, etc. For the price I would rate it excellent. Just be prepared for plastic plates, soda served in the can, etc. Service is good, even... More
