We wanted to experience a Flamand estaminet but the one in the village where we were staying wasn't open for lunch. We drove the short distance to Bavinchove and entered, stepping back a century. Plain wooden furniture, bygones and music of the past marked it as a place where real people had met as a matter of course in their... More

When you enter this estaminet (café where you can eat) it is as if you go 100 years back in time. Everything is so well preserved, even the music they play is old. They serve a variety of Belgian beers, I drank a beer that even I, a big Belgian beer fan, haven't seen before. The salad and cheese is... More

We had lunch in this typical "estaminet" in Bavinckhove near Calais. The atmosphere is that of an old flemish inn. Of course the food is not meant to be "gastronomie" but it is a healthy, hearty meal with big portions. The list of drinks includes an impressive number of famous Belgian beers . Recommended for those who are hungry and... More

I returned to In den Goedendag for lunch on June 23, 2012, after a morning's ramble in the Flemish countryside. The only difference between this visit and last year's was that this time a busload of Belgian tourists were enjoying the typical Flemish fare and engaging in animated conversation. At one point, the old wall-mounted telephone from1943 rang and Catherine,... More

In den Goedendag is an authentic Flemish estaminet. The menu offers Flemish specialties and a selection of 52 different beers and ales, on draft and in bottles, from breweries across northern France and Belgium. When I visited In den Goedendag, I had been walking all morning and wanted to have lunch before continuing my walk. When I saw the menu... More
